AUCTIONS. H. MATSON AND CO. H MATSON AND CO.'S REPORT ON THE MARKET. STORE CATTLE. There was a fairly large yarding in this department, the entry comprising 230 head, of which Messrs H. Mateon and Co.'a entry was 60. The cattle, on tho whole, were more or less of an unattractive description, being chiefly old cows. Competition for the one or two odd beasts showing good breeding and good colours demanded keen attention and keener price 3, but there were so few that they were hardly worth q-uoting. Generally, we are of opinion that the tone ol the market is hardening. We quote as follows: Best cows, £3 to £3 12 8 Gd. Medium cows, £2 33 to £2 12» 6d. Old cows, £1 12s to £1 ISs. Bulls, £2 10s to £5 16s. FOR BEST RESULTS CONSIGN TOUR STOCK TO H. MATSON and CO. ADDIXGTON. FAT CATTLE. The entry tc-day comprised 570 head, as against CBO last week. H. Matson and Co.'s catalogue comprised 135. The entry was quite a representative one as regards tbe different sexes and different grades, but for the most part the shortage was in wellfinished, choice, and select weights. There was a good percentage of good cows, and as far as H. Matson and Co.'s offering was i-oncerned, taking our entry as a whole, we had a better class of cattle forward, and on our particular 6al»s we report a good sale throughout, with & spurt now and then on some of the extra quality steers and heifers. Of course, unfinished cattl* or secondary boef was on the same basis as what it haa been for the last week or two, namely, seesaw grade, and vendors quite recogniso that unless their article is a finished article and 'a prime one, that they have to be prepared to accept the' current rates which have been ruling. "We know iha.1 1 there is a section of visitors to tnt> market who always are prepared to ffwear that the market was considerably down, but while we admit there were irregularities, wherever the cattle were goad ihandy weights and well finished there was little or no variation. i We quote a* follows: — Extra heavy steers, from £l6 to £l7 Ss. Prime, from £l3 to £H 15s. Medium, from £ll to £l2 10a. Light, trom £6 to £7 10s. Heifers, extra heavy, from £lO to £ll 10s. Prime, from £8 to £9 Ss. Medium, from £5 5s to £7 10* Light, from £4 to £4 13s. Extra heavy cows, from £9 10« to £ll 15s. Prime, from £7 5s to £8 15s. Medium, from £5 5s to £6 10s. Light; from £3 to £4 sa. CALVES. There was another large yarding of veal of all irrades, comprising 260 head, of which H. Matson and Co.'a entry comprised 85. Again the yarding comprised a l»rg e proportion of inferior to medium exhibits, and on the whole entry it would have been hard to have secured 50 really good calves from tho total. .The best quality beasts maintained tho market value to the fullest, but the others, in sympathy with the previous week, sold irregularly. Wo quote as follows: Largo runners, up to £6 10s. Best calves, £2 ,to £2 10s. Good calves, 32s to 37s 6d. ■■ Medium calves, 25s to 30a. - Small ca!ve3, 15s to 235. FAT PIGS.
Only a medium, entry of porkers forward, 203 being yarded, of which Messrs H. Matßon and Company's entry was 100. The sale opened on a par with lato rates and improved considerably over the laot three raoes, showing an advance of 4« to 5s a. head. There was quite a good entry of bacpnera forward, 230 being yarded, of which Messrs H. Matson and Company's entry was ICS. The demand throughout waa quito gaod and prices ruled on a per with previous aalcs, all lots selling *» satisfactory prices. Values were:— Light porkers £2 8s to £2 Ift*. Heavy porkere £3 to £3 10s. Extra heavy porkers to £3 lfi». Average nrice> 8d to 9d. Light baconers £4 to £4 10s. Heavy baconers £4 15s to. £5 Bs. Eitra heavy baconers to £5 IBs. Average price 6Jd to 7Jd. Choppers £3 10s to £7, according to .quality. , STOKE PIGS. . Quite a fair entry forward, 210 being yarded, of which Messrs H. Mateon and Company's.-entry was 113. A' good attendance of buyers present. The sale opened on a par with late rates, but towards the ,end of tho sale values improved, especially in the ease of weaners and email stores. Values were: — Weaners, very small, 8e to 12a. . Better aorta 16a to 20s. Small stores 23b to 30s. ' Medium stores 35s to 40s. Largo stores to 48s. DAIRY CATTLE. The total entry comprised 72 head, of which H. Matson and Company's catalogue comprised 48. There were on© or two very good springers yarded, which met \with. spirited competition. Backward: calvera and cows in poor condition were, as usual, hard to quit. We quote:— ... ~» , Best second, third and fourth cawers £lO to £ls. • ■,,_,,! . Medium second, third .and fourth salvers £6 •to £9 10s. Best heifers £9 to £l3 S». Medium heifers £5 to £B. Cows in milk £2 to £5. STORE SHEEP. There was a big falling off in the «vbtf at tc-day'a market. We .consider the total entry represented about 7000 sheep, containine a Jair proportion of wethers, lambs, and ewes. H.
