THEATRE ROYAL.
"SAN TOY." Fpr tho comparatively' brief season of a week, Christchurch theatregoers will be afforded an opportunity of seeing the musical comedy "San Toy," which is being presented at the Theatre Royal by the Christchurch Amateur Operaiic Company. It is an opportunity which they should certainly feo that they do not miss. 'A good house greeted the second night of the production last evening, and all who witnessed it came away impressed by the amount of talent" included in the company. Tho quality of tho work, as might bo expected, showed an improvement on that of the previous, evening, and the few minor slips which were noticeable on that occasion wore corrected last night, with * result that the offering was pleasing in the extremo, <and carried with it an air of completeness which ia lacking even with some professional companies. As a, speotacle, "San Toy" leaves little to bo desired. Ha Oriental atmosphere lends itself admirably in,such a connexion, and the eoenes were a wealth of colour. The scenery and wardrobe were, considered from all angles, excellent, and provided a feast for the eve. They were previously used in tho Auckland Amateur Operatic Society a production." The plot of "San Toy" is of the love of an English officer for the daughter of a Chinese mandarin, and of the experiences the couple go through before they are allowed to marry. There is a lot .of Oriental scheming done and for a time San Toy, who is the daughter referred to, passes as a boy. __
