FISHING SEASON.
DRAWING TO A CLOSE. The fishing season is drawing to a close and few bags are now being landed from Canterbury rivers. Quite a good bag was, however, caught during the week-end by an angler from the Main Drain. After lunch he landed 59 trout, the great majority of which were small and undersized, and had in consequence to be thrown back into the stream, in accordance with the law, but at the same time he secured thirteen nsli ■of a handy size.
Brown trout are now running up stream to spawn, and shingle in the river-beds is in consequence being disturbed by tie fish when depositing their ova. Fins are also to be seen showing above the water as the fish make their way upstream. The quinnat salmon that have been caught recently in Canterbury streams. practicallv without exception bear traces of having been, attacked by sharks or other voracious fish, deep wounds caused by sharp teeth on various parts of the body indicating how close thev have been to being, devoured.
