OLD PICNIC GROUND.
OTARAMA SIDING CLOSED. Yesterday the Otarama siding on the Midland line was closed by the Eailway Department, and in future the nearest stops will be at Kowai Bush and Staircase stations, which are six miles twelve chains apart. The closing down of the siding will not cause much inconvenience, as at no time within recent years was there a great deal of business done through it, the district it served being wild and precipitous. Some years ago, however, Otarama was a favourite picnicking place for Christchurch people, and the Eailway Department used to run wellpatronised excursions to it on holidays The scenery in those days was better than at the present time, for the country in the vicinity of the Waimakariri Gorge was covered with beautiful bush until a big fire completely destroyed it. Nowadays the favourite place on the line for Christchurch excursionists is Otira, a good many miles further on.
