A picturesque feature of the Makerua swamp is a floek of about 200 pukekos, who are to be seen frequently in the vicinity of the big mill (says the "Manawatu Daily Times"). These handsome birds have multiplied rapidly in the past year or two and have attracted a great deal of attention from visitors, many of whom go specially to see them. Mr A. Seifert has made the Mirauni property something of a sanctuary for the pnkeko, and is desirous of preserving the birds.
