SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
_—*—. ANNUAL ELECTIONS. The householders in the various school districts met last night to elect School Committees. Results:—
EAST CHRISTCHURCH. There were only about a dozen householders at the East Christchurch School last night for the annual meeting. Mr TV. 0. Harvey was voted to the chair.
The annual report mentioned that since the amalgamation of the infants' school with the main school, the incidental allowance had been reduced, although the expenses had been increased. During the year Mr TV. Johnson resigned his seat on the committee, and Mr Green was appointed. The grounds had been improved during the year. In conjunction with the East Christchurch Swimming Club, the committee had raised enough funds to erect new dressing sheds and seating accommodation. The school had been fairly successful in sports competitions, and the tennis court was now in good order. At the end of last year the attendance on the roll was S9B, a decrease of 3G on Ihe previous year. As to the finances, the No. 1 account showed a debit of £lO Os 3d, and No. 2 account a credit of £lO 16s Sd.
On the motion of the chairman, a hearty vote of thanks was passed to tho headmaster and staff, and Mr TVake replied, mentioning th.e good feeling existing between the staff and committee.
A vote of sympathy was passed to Mr W. Johnson in his illness. No new nominations were received, and last vcar's committee, consisting of Messrs G. L. Bull, 8.. T. Cowper, J. D. Gray, J. A. Grange, TV. O. Harvey, A. T. Stokes, H. Bosindalc, J. G. Green, and Dr. Borrie, were elected.. In answer to a question, Mr TVake (headmaster) said he thought that only one week's holiday would be given in August in place of a fortnight. He also appealed to the parents to be very particular and send their children to Bchool on wet days, as their absence meant a great drawback, especially as the school had started late this year.
A meeting of the committee was held after the general meeting, and Mr TV. 0. Harvey was elected chairman for the fourth year in succession.

WEST CHRISTCHURCH. There was a small attendance at the annual meeting of householders of West Christchurch District High School last evening. The chairman of the commit; tee, Mr J. H. Jones, presided. The annual report stated that the past year had been an important one in the history of the school, as it marked tho fiftieth year of its existence. The jubiloo was celebrated very successfully. This was due to the whole-hearted support of old pupils. Mention was made particularly of the work of Messrs D. McKenzie and Alex. Hay. During the year the main portion of the new building had been opened by tho non. Sir James Parr. There had been several changes of staff during the year, but despite this the scholastic side of the school had been particularly good. In sport the school had been successful, the senior boys winning the secondary schools' third grade football competition, and the senior girls tho secondary schools' basket-ball. The old committee was elected as follows:-—Messrs J. H. Jones (chairman), TV. Comber, J. A. Taylor, M. Hall, A. Hay, J. Middleton, H. 11. Lane, D. McKenzie, and H. TVhitton.
A voto of thanks was accorded the headmaster and his staff for their efficient work.
In replying, the headmaster said that if the correspondence carried on during the epidemic had taught nothing else it had shown that parents were sympathetic and that they realised that the teachers were rather a useful lot. He thanked the chairman for his remarks, and said that relations between the committee and staff had always been most cordial.
Votes of thankß were accorded Mrs Beattie and her sou for their ivork in connexion ivitli the school, and the chairman.
SYDENHAM. Messrs J. K. Archer, V. fraylc. T. H. Butterfield, H. J. lioddinott, J. H. Pratt, E. A. J. Hooper. J. A. Kean, G. H. Rintoul, and H. H. MeCaw were elected the Sydenham School Committee for tho ensuing year. Mr J. K. Archer presided at the meeting of householders, held last night. | Discussion arose in connexion with a suggestion tbat the Education autho- j rities be urged to demolish the old school building facincr Brougham street and erect a new building in its, stead. It was decided that steps be taken to bring the condition of the building under the notice of the Education Board, with a request that the Government be urged to provido a new ?chool. The meeting was unanimously in faTour of raising the school age to 16 years, providing it could be made practicable from the point of view of ■working-class people. The balance-sheet shoved a credit of £l9 19s lOd. Great alterations and improvements had been made to the school premises, especially tho rooms on the Colombo street side, which had been reconstructed and reseated, stated the [ annual report. A large number of dual ! desks had been put in the primary department and other changes had been I made adding to the efficiency of the equipment. The teaching staff, under tho headmrstership of Mr l?umbold, liad nerformed its duties well, with gratifying results. Tho girls of the sixth standard had excelled themselves and had dono ereat honour to their teacher. Miss Pearson. Every girl had secured proficiency. The chr.irman (Mr J. K. Archer) said that the roll number at the commencement of last year had been 983. and at the cud 1013, which was a record for the school.'
RICHMOND. There was a very large attendance at the annual meeting of householders at Richmond. Mr F. E. Talbot presided.
The balance-sheet showed a credit of £36 10s 4d on No. 2 account. The other accounts were in a fairly healthy state.
The annual report, referred to the continued progress of the school in all departments, which had been well maintained. It was expected the new school would be ready for occupation in about eight or ten weeks. The report and lialance-shects were adopted, practically without discussion. A motion was carriod supporting the School Committees' Association's proposal that the school age be l-aised to 16 years, and that the Government be requested to give economic relief to parents. It was decided to call a meeting of householders, pupils, and past pupils to discuss the arrangements for the school jubilee in September. The "following committee was elected: —Messrs Talbot, Petrie, Browne, Clausou, Pentecost, Saunders, Steward McClurg, Graham. Mr Talbot was re-elected chairman of the committee.
ELMWOOD. Mr A. Ockenden presided over an attendance of about "thirty householders in the Elm wood School.
The annual report, which was adopted, stated that the school had greatlv benefited Wy the cordial relationship bctwecu the committee ana the staff. The school was deeply indebted to many friends and supporters who had fiven their services and hr.aucial kelp." The school had lost a valued friend in the death of Mr D. hcapath. LINWOOD. There was an attendance of .".bout sixty residents at tho annual meeting of the householders of the Linwood School district. Mr H. F. Herbert presided. The chairman's annual report stated that the incidental allowance was not sufficient to maintain a school of tho size of Linwood in the way in which it should be kent. During the year tho scholars and' staff had raised nearly £SO by their own efforts for improvements to the school. The >'o. 1 bank account showed that tho receipts were £593 15s 4d, and the expenditure £519 7s Gel. The >o. 2 account showed a balanco of £39 Os 9d, the receipts being £390 9s. The sj>ecial account (open air classroom) showed a credit balanc? of £566 10s (3d. In moving the. adoption of the report, the chairman said that the members of the committee had worked well. During the year they had concentrated their ettorts'on obtaining a caretaker's cottage. Thev had suggested to the Minister of Education that a caretaker's cottage should be provided for all schools with an attendance of over 500. In regard to an open air classroom, the people had helped them to raise £3OO. Tho Board had offered chem a room which would not be suitable, but after two years of negotiations, they had agreed upon a splendid tvpe of room, to accommodate 48 pupils. The Denartment had promised that work would bo commenced immediately. The attendance at the reopening'of the school yesterday had been overflowing, and St. Chad's school room had had to be rented to accommodate the pupils. They had at present £556 i*t the bank, of which £2OO had to be paid towards the new schoolroom. Tho allowance for the caretaker's salary was hopelessly inadequate, and he hoped that the Department would ba shamed into allowing a living wage for the man. On the- motion of Mr K. Carter it was decided to support the Sehool Committees' Association in its efforts to gain an increased incidental allowance, frco school books and the appointment of teachers by committees. Lindley. who had held that office for. three years. A similar vote was accorded Mr H. Mcintosh, wko retired from the committee. At a subsequent mectino; of tlio committee. Mr H. F. Herbert w?.s reelected chairman, Mr H. J. Bowlker deputy-chairman, and Mr R. G. Armstrong secretary.
ST. ALBANS. The election of the St. Albans School Coram it too resulted: —Messrs C. G. CSaridge, E. J. Haves. G. T. Grover, G. O. Scy, and C. J. W. Willcox. As only five were nominated, the following' names woro recommended to the committee lor election .—Messrs T. P. Moore. Bryley, L. Belletto and Bylaw!.
The circular from the School Committees' Association was referred to the incoming committee. A resolution asking the Education IMard to revert to the old method of nominating and electing the committee at the householders' meeting was passed. The headmaster's report, which was adopted, stated that the roll number hrd risen from (511 to. 685, and the average attendance from 556 to GOG. The committee's report stated that a fete had raised £149 and two concerts had yielded -£36.
Eulogistic reference was made to the work of the retiring secretary, Mr G. T. Hi I fed on, an<l he was accorded a vote of thanks.
ADDINGTON. The annual meeting of the householders of Addington was held at the Aldington School last night. Mr G. Wear presided over about 50 people.
The chairman made appreciative reference to the last mistress of the infant school, Miss J. H. Thompson, and thanked Mr J?. J>. Clark and his staff for the way in which they had carried out their duties. The annual report stated that more ventilation and tetter lighting had just been provided io the infant rooms. Notwithstanding the proposed erection of a school in Lyttelton street, more accommodation woidd still be urgently needed. The inspectors' reports had been highly satisfactory. The erection of a handsome pavilion bv the Addington Swimming "Club in connexion with the school baths had been a great boon.
A vote of thanks was passed to the Rev. Canon Bean for giving religious instruction to the school children. Thanks were accorded Mcsdames E. Thrower and S. G. Millard, the lady members of last year's committee, and to the Rev. J. Hay ward, the retiring secretarv.

SPREYDON. The annual meeting of householders of Sprey:!or. to elect the school committee was held in the Spreydon School last night. Mr J- Mackenzie presided over 24 people. Tha annual report showed a successful rear. The order, discipline and behaviour of the scholars had been excellent from cverv point of vjew. A vote of thanks and appreciation was nassed to the headmaster (Mr J. Voss'J and tho staff for their work during the year. . RICCARTON. The annual meeting of householders was held in the Riccarton Schoolroom last evening. .Mr Goo. Witty, M.P., presiding over a large attendance. Mr Geo. Witty, M.P.. offered tho dux medal for tho school for tho ensuing year, and several special prizes were promised.
After considerable discussion it was decided to offer prizes for the first three boys and girls in each standard for the ensuing year.
WHARENUI. Tho big assembly room at tho Wharenui School (Riccarton) was crowded last night for the annual meeting of householders, there being well over one hundred present. Mr T. AV. Stephenson presided. The. annual report stated that the year closed with balances of £9 Os 2d in the general account and £l7 18s 3d in No. 2 account. The principal work had been completing the grading and levelling of tho grounds, which had cost more than anticipated. By means of concerts, etc., the full amount had been paid. A contract for £265 had been let for installing a hot water radiator heating system in the main school. Tho committee's share of tho cost would bo £176 13s 4d. Tho roll number at tho bcginaiing of the year was 375, with an average attendance of 315, and tho year closed with 386, average attendance 353. Examination results had been very satisfactory. Tit© school fair, to raise funds for improvements, was well irt hand, and a big success seemed assured. Thanks were given to Mr C. W. Buckett, one of the committee, for organising concerts, etc. Reference was made to the fact that Mr S. F. AVilson, one of the members of the committee, had been selected to accompany ,th© All Blacks on their recent tour, and had returned. The committeo hoped that this year it would be possible to complete the tree-planting. The report was adopted. Mr Staples moved, Mr Bates seconded, and it was carried unanunouslv. "That this meeting of householders of the AVharenui school district enters an emphatic protest against the reduction of the Government subsidy on voluntarv i ontributions from 50 pe,- cent, to "S3 1-3 per cent., and that this meeting considers that the subsidy should rather bo increased. Speakers pointed out that all the real improvements to th« school grounds and buildings had been largely financed bv the people of the district, and tho improvements immediately became tho property of the Education Department. " On the motion of Mr F. Piatt, it was decided that the incoming committee should he recommended to protest agr.inst the raising of the school age until further information wa;: available. The protest of the School Committees' Association against amendments to the Education Act was also upheld.
SHIRLEY. Mr C. S. Thompson presided over a good attendance. On the motion of Mr J. Blank, it was deckled that the City Council should again be written to with regard to the question of widening the traffic bridge at the corner of Hill's road and Shirley road. Mr Blank said that the bridge, in its present state, was a menace to the children.
The annual report stated that as the result of representations made by the committee, Shirley road, in front of the school, had been' improved. Heprcscntafions had been .made with regard to the state of the bridges in Slater and Chancellor streets, in the vicinity of the school, but nothing definite had been done yet. They had been informed that it would be some months before the sewerage system was extended to the Shirley district. As there were 65?. pupils on the roll, it would be seen how neccssnrv the scwer3 were to the school.
The report was adopted. The following committee was elected unopposed for the ensuing year:—Mrs C McKav, and Messrs G. Finney, C. 11. Bursoh. C. Hunt, C. Ives, T. Stanley, E. C. Salt, J. A. Muir, and C. S. Thompson. After discussion, a resolution to the effect that the Education Department should be urged to amend the regulations, so that the inspector's report could be read at the annual meeting of householders, was lost. It was decided that a fair should be held towards the end of the year to raise funds in aid of the school, the details to be left in the hands of the committee^ The chairman paid a tribute to the work done by the teaching staff of the school during the past year, .ind- a hearty vote of thanks was passed to the teachers,
SOMERFIELD. The annual meeting of householders of SomorScld was held at the Somerficld School last night. Mr AV. H. Winsor presided. The annual report stated thaC the school roll had been considerably increase.!. The inspectors had reported on the high state of efficiencv in tho school and the excellent work of individual teachers.

WOOLSTON. There was an attendance of about 450 householders at tho annual meeting in tho Woolston Schoo] last evening. Mr C. Baldwin presided. • There were eighteen nominations for positions on 1 the committee and nine w'ero required. The following were elected: —Messrs 11. 0. Rowlands, S. AV. R«id, F. C. Pepper. E. C. Pegg, W. F. B. Turvey. G. H. Randall, W. Andrews, J. and J. Radeliffe.
WALTHAM. The Waltham householders met last evening in the schoolroom. Mr <C. A\ T . Harvey presided over a fair attendance.
On the motion of Mr Harvey a rote of sympathy was passed with Mr Massey in his serious ilncss. Tho report and balance-sheet, which showed ii credit balance, were read and adopted. The election of a committee* for the ensuing Year resulted as follows: — Messrs A. Gray, H. J. Watts. A. H. Turner, W. 11. Symons, A. G. Simmonds, W. G. Pegley, J. H. Shier, W. Schumacher, and H. BURWOOD. At the meeting of tho Burwood householders last evening Mr Liggins was elected chairman for the meeting, and Mr McKechnie appointed secretary..
A brief report on the work of the committee for the past year was read by the chairman.
'it was reported that there was a credit balance of £3O fo r the year. The work of the headmaster, Mr L. B. Bradstock, and the excellent condition of the school and grounds were also mentioned. For the first time in the history of the school, verbal non.mations could be accepted owing; to there being only six nominations, while seven were required. From the nine nominated tho following were elected:— Messrs J. Liggins, H. Eowse, G. *'• Robinson, W. Bucktin, J. D. McKechnie, J. "Wilson, W. Barupton, Mr J. Liggins was appointed chairman, and Mr J. D. McKechnie secretary.
A special meeting for the purpose of considering what was to be dona with the money in the Swimming Bath Fund, was held at the conclusion or the business of the principal meeting. The lowest tender submitted to the committee for a swimming bath was £827, and this did not include the laying on of water and several other indispensable works, thus bringing the amount needed to carry out the work to approximately £IOOO. The money that was in hand was derived from various fetes, etc., and totalled £253. The maximum subssidy allowed by the Education Board was £2OO, leaving approximately £550 to be raised. A motion that the funds m hand should be spent in improving the school and surroundings, whereby the money would become doubled hy subsidy was carried. It was moved that a letter be sent; to the Education Board intimating that a subsidy of £2OO was inadequate for a swimming bath. Some fifty householders attended the meeting.
NEW BRIGHTON. The annual meeting of householders for the purpose of electing a school committee was held last night. Mr F. Ward presided and there was a very large attendance. I'he following were elected to the committee:—Rev. C. W. 1. Maclaverty Rev. F. T. Read, Mrs Bellamy, Messr* E. A. Langford, E. A. Lawry, R. Nelson, J. Buxton, J. Osborn, and Mrs 31. Moses.
At the subsequent meeting of the new committee, Mr Buxton was elected chairman. It was resolved on the voices that the present method of prize distributiqn be adhered to and "that a. shelter shed bo obtained for the school. The Mavor (Mr J. Gamble), on behalf of the retiring committee, presented Mr Ward, the retiring chairman, with an illuminated address in appreciative recognition of his long service of some 16 years. On the motion of the Mayor, tne following resolution was carried unanimouslv:—That this meeting of householders desire to record great appreciation of the service rendered by Mr F. Ward during the period of 16 years in which he has been connected witn the committee, as secretary for nine years and chairman for six. His work has been thorough and his record of attendance most commendable- this meeting expresses its reoret on account of Mr Ward s retirement and wishes him health and happiness in the future. Mr H. A. Glaseon was re-elected secretary.
SUMNER. There was a largo attendance of householders at the meeting last night, Mr W. H. Nicholson, the Mayor, presiding. The annual report was Jread and adopted, and on the motion of Mr H. W. Heslon, seconded by the Rev. "W. J. Williams, a heartv Vote of thanks accorded to the committee. A resolution of sympathy with the family of the Prime Minister was carried unanimously. The outgoing committee, the staff and the officials of the Education Board were also accorded hearty votes of thanks. The meeting unanimously _ decided to urge the incoming committee to press for the buildings required for the secondary department and the technical classes. RANGIORA. The annual meeting of householders was held last night. The Mayor, Mr W. A. Rowse, presided, and there was an- attendance of 80 householders. In the- report submitted by the chairman, it was stated that the average attendance for the year had been 361.78, equal to 92.6 per cent, of the roll number. Although the school had not been reopened since the Christmas vacation, the pupils had been doing home lessons with good results, ana it was hoped that on the resumption of the classes the attendance'would be good. Several changes had taken place in the staff. The headmaster, Mr O. G. M. Boyce.had resigned to take up a similar position at Ashburton, while Miss Lace, the assistant rfUstress, had accepted an appointment in the North Island. Mr B. A. McKeown had been appointed to the headmastership, and Miss Percy to succeed Miss Lace. Mrs F. \S. Reynolds and Mr L. Jack had resigned, and Mr Rice had been transferred. The vacancies had been filled bv Miss Murphy, Miss Wilkinson and Mr A. Chambers. The best thanks of the committee were tendered to the headmasters and staff for their work during the year, and a welcome extended to the new members. A highly satisfactory report had been received from the inspectors, showing that the school was well organised and controlled, good progress being maintained. Thirty-seven pupils had gained proficiency certificates and 11 competencies, there being no failures. A section had been purchased to enlarge the plavgrounds, acd improvements effected to the infant school. The report was adopted. The following were elected to the committee:—Messrs H. C. Benges, A.
