"Wr "William A. Martin, a wellknown Gisbome surveyor, died there suddenly on Friday, states a Press Association message.

A return was issued last month {riving details so far as they are available of the total expenditure (apart from loans) in England and Wales, and also for Scotland, on public social services under various Acts of Parliament. These services include national health insurance, unemployment insurance, old age pensions, war pensions, education, housing, and other matters. The figures for 1923, the latest year for which the total is given, were" £287,685,702 for England and Wales and £40,633,616 for Scotland. The expenditure on these social services in 1911 was £55,111,210 for England and Wales and £7,883,457 for Scotland.
