MID-CANTERBURY

ASHBURTON.

GENERAL NEWS. There was a good attendance at the cuchre tournament conducted on Thursday evening by the Ashburton Amateur •Swimming Club in aid of the bath fund. Mr 0. Stills was the winner of the tournament, and he will have to play off with the winner of another tournament, to be held shortly, to decide who is to secure the lady's bicvcle.

A petition in bankruptcy has been tiled by John Hcnrv White, formerly of Lauriston and now farm manager at Lowcliffe, and a meeting of creditors will be held in the office of the DeputyOfficial Assignee to-morrow at 11 a.m. Competitions Society. The Ashburton Competitions Society, which was formed some months ago, will hold its first series of competitions, commencing on Augurt 10th and lasting for six days. The Ashburton County Scottish Society has offered special prizes for the most points in the Highland fling and seann triubhais for competitors under the ages of 12, 15. and 18, sailors' hornpipe (open), and the Scottish reel for children under 14 and IS. The Bristol Piano Company lias also offered a gold medal for the best piano soloist under 18 years. The "Norwegian Bridal Song" (Greig) has been selected as the piece. MrL. H. Goddard, organist of St. Matthew's Clinch, Dunedin, will judge the musical section of the competitions, and he has offered to give an organ recital, the proceeds of which would be devoted to some charitable institution. Mr S. H. Osborne, of Dunedin, will judge the elocutionary section at the competitions. Tinwald Domain Board.. At a meeting of the Tinwald Domain Board, held on Friday, there were present: Messrs W. Bryant (chairman), T. E. Tarbotton, B. Wills, and J. Hampton. Mr Tarbotton reported that the division fence had been erected in a very sr.it.isfsetory manner, and suggested that the Board plant two rows of gum trees along the drive. It. was decided to inspect the site before doing anything in the matter. The secretary was instructed to write to tenants, instructing them to clean water-races on the Board's property. A donation of 10s was received from Mr A. J. Breakwcll.

Magistrate's Court. At the sitting of the Ash burton Magistrate 's Court on Friday, Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., presided. , On a judgment summons order, S. J. Beaven (Ashburton) was ordered to pay J. M. Nolan, Ashburton, the amount of £1 9s Id forthwith, in default two days' imprisonment. For riding without a light, Jessie Watson was fined 2s. Lewis Ennis was fined 10s and costs for riding on the footpath. For exposing lice-infected sheep for sale in the Ashburton salcyards, William Buchan, Alford Forest, was convicted and lined 10s and costs. For a similar offence, James Gordon McConochie, Ashburton, and William Bennett, Wiuchmore, were each convicted and fined 20s and costs. Road Board Nominations. As the nominations for seats on the Upper Ashburton and the Wakanui Road Boards dp not exceed the required number, there will be no election. In each case the names that have been handed in to the Eeturning Officers are those of members who sat on the Boards last year, and they arc as follows:—Upper Ashburton: Messrs S. H. Lill, R. J. Mulligan, Angus Horsey, H. Morris, R.' Houston, and T. J. Lemon. Wakanui: F. Frampton, W. Anderson, L. Hanrahan, J. Watson, and A. Hight.

METHVEN. A special committee meeting of the Methven District High School was held on Thursday evening. Present: Messra Stanley Smith (chairman), J. Osborne, H. H. Pawson, "W. E. Battson, Rev. Geo. Hercus, and Mr McKee. Apologies were rceived from Messrs J. W. M. Dart ar.d 8. Holmes. The chairman stated thai the purpose for which the meeting was called was to discuss the advisability of holding the opening function in connexion with the recently established Hi git School. After discussion it was decided to hold an opening ceremony at the school to-d'ay. The ceremony will take place at 2 p.m., when addresses will be given by members of the committee. The restrictions imposed by the health authorities in regard to the assembling of children having been lifted, children will be allowed to take part in the proceedings.

HINDS. At a meeting of the Hinds Improvement Committer the resignation of Mr C. D. Chisnall was received. The County Council submitted a plan of the proposed lighting of. the township. After discussion, the plan was adopted with minor alterations. Mr Geo. McKeage was appointed a member of the committee.

At a meeting of Hinds No. 2 Domain Board, the resignation of Air Paterson was received and Mr Hockley was appointed in his place. It was decided to have cut grass j-emoved from the domain, to have fences cut, goise grubbed, and the water-race cleared. Oth?r improvements, such as painting the buildings, erecting bridges over the water-race, and a stile over the fence will be effected in the near future. Large numbers of fat lambs arc being sent from Hind", and recently one train took away upwards of 30 trucks. The railway employees have re-erect-ed a fence around one of the plantations near the Hinds station. This gives the station a very tidy appearance.

Although the electric current is flowing past the station, the pumps to fill the tanks are being manned by the surfacemen, who are cooped up in a little building* The Hinds- Ladies' Hockey Club celebrated the opening of the season by holding a very enjoyable dance in the Hinds H!all on Thursday evening. Miss L. Faterson proved an efficient secretary, and Mr C. P. Reid carried out the duties of M.O.

RAKAIA. The chairman of the South Bakaia School Committee has received plans of the proposed re-modelling of the school building. It is proposed to provide a new flat ceiling in the eastern class-; room, and to reduce the length of the room and provide a teacher's room at one end. In the central room cross ventilation is to ue provided. In the western room a flat ceiling is to be built and in all *ho rooms the lighting is to be improved, the galleries removed, and general repairs executed.

For the annual election of members of the South Rakaia Road Board live nominations have been received. As this is the required number an election will not bo necessary. The members of the Board for 1925 are Messrs A. J. Magson, H. J. Crothers, James Lambie, H. A Harrison and W. W. Carruthers.
