NORTH CANTERBURY.
RANGIORA. The annual meeting of the Ashley Educational Institute was held the Kangiora School on Friday. Mr H. F. Thomson presided over an excellent attendance. The balance-sheet showed that £46 had been received as subscriptions and £1 15s 4d as interest, while the credit balance was £3O 16s. Morland reported that a highly successful sports meeting had been " eld 111 Rangiora last November, and it was resolved to have another this - c ' l '' i*_ an earlier date if possible. KAIKOURA. The euchre 'tournament organised by the Drill Hall .Improvement Committee continues to receive good support, there being a good attendance at tho last evening. Tho prizes were won by Miss Fisher and. Mr H. Chisnall; consolation prizes going to Sirs "• CH and K. Evans. . . , Local footballers are putting in good work at the practices in the Drill tho junior players being very keen. As a result play in tho field should show a great improvement. Au afternoon was tendered Mrs J. J. Anderson, by Mrs A. Gooch, on Wednesday, when a.pleasant afternoon was spent. Mrs Anderson, with her husband, will bo leaving Kaikoura early next month. . -
The Hapuku ladies are showing a keenness for hockey this season, and plav will start earlier, than usual. Mrs Guinane has proved a good organiser ancl an energetic secretary. The fishinsr industry is still under a cloud as a result of the freezer being closed, and several of the fishermen are preparing to leave Kaikoura. Tho adjourned monthly meeting .or the Kaikoura A. and P. Association took place on Wednesday afternoon, Mr P. Acton Adams {president) presiding over a good attendance of members. Mr W. Dale was elected a member. Several donors of special prizes _ wrote agreeing to allow their donations to stand o.ver until next year. The treasurer reported that £lB lie had been received for the last sale of sheep in oonesdon with the sheep drive. Twenty-' four sheep were being grazed and would be eent to Addington for realisation. The total so far derived from the sheep drive was £53 6s. There was a credit balance on current account of £23 10s (inclusive of special donations of £33). With the latter amount ear-marked for next year there was at present a debit balance of approximately £lO. A separate account existed at the Post Office of £BS 16s 7d, the original amount invested being £2l 19s, which had been increased by interest. Mr G. E. Parsons offered the use of his car to secure outstanding subscriptions. The offer was accepted, and the president and Mr A. Boyd were appointed to canvass with Mr Parsons. It was decided to invest tho sheep drive money in the Post Office. Messrs A. Boyd and J. Walter were appointed to deal With tenders for cutting the Show Ground hedge. The sum of £2 2s was passed for payment as subscription to the "Royal Agricultural Show, £1 Is for use of library, and £1 to W. Clement for carting. Mr A. Gooch consented to assist the. treasurer in carrying out tha secretarial duties until an officer was appointed to succeed the retiring secretary (Mr J. J. Anderson) who is leaving the district.
ASHLEY BANK. The annual meeting of St. Simon's and St. Jude's Church was held in the church on Tuesday evening, the Rev. J. F. Feron, the vicar, presiding over a fair attendance. The election of officers for the ensuing year was as follows. — Vicar's warden, Mr F. Bradshaw; people's warden, Mr G. Eatley; vestry, Misses J. Croft and E. Bowbyes, Messrs W. Stringer, J. A. Petre, P. J. Lindsay, G. Holbrough. It was decided. to open the Sunday school the first Sunday after the epidemic restrictions are lifted. Weather conditions have been favourable for deep ploughing, the recent heavy rains softening the ground considerably.
CHORLTON-LITTLE AKALOA. The postponed opening of the football club took place on Thursday. The dance was held in the Chorlton Hall the evening previous. During the supper interval, Mr E. Waghorn, on behalf of the hall committee, placed in position the enlarged photograph of the Club, presented by it to the public halL Mr H. and Miss Swayne have been spending a long holiday with their sister, Mrs R. Bailey. Mr and Mrs J. Finders, juirr., have returned to their home in Dunedra, after a holiday spent with Mr and Mrs Ralph Waghorn, *
BARRHILL. On Thursday evening in the Barrhill school a complimentary social was given by the residents of Barrhill in honour of Messrs P. and J. McCabe, who have sold their farm and are leaving tho district." Mr J- Bishop occupied tho chair, and there was a very large attendance. The chairman, on behalf of those present, presented Mr P. Moj Cabo with a pair of field glasses for himself, and a case of pipes for Mr J. McCabe, who was unavoidably absent. Mr Bishop spoke of the interest taken by Mr P. McCabe, in all public affairs in the district, and of his good work on the school committee, and in the social life of the community. He expressed the deep regret which was felt at tie departure of the Messrs' McCabe, and wished them every success in the future. Several other friends and neighbours of Messrs McCabe brothers alsu spoke' in eulogistic terms of the departing guests, referring to theif popularity, kindness, and willingness to help on every occasion. Mr P. MoCabe, on behalf of his brother and himself, returned thanks. A pleasant social evening was spent and several toasts were honoured.
DOYLESTON.
Another well-attended euchre tournament was held in the Doyleston Hall in aid of the side-shows at the coming bazaar. Prizes were won by Miss Jean. Quigley and Mrs J. ~W. Williams and by Messrs J. Godsall and W. Doyle.

LEESTON.
A concert paxfcy from Chris tchurch, under the management of Mr J- • Cohen, gave a programme at Leeston on Thursday evening to help the funds of the tennis club" s ■ bazaar. I , ?? 8 were given by Messrs Itex IJoothi F. H. Drewitt, A. Johnston, fMonro, J. Cohea, O. Oolta?, Coffey, Mrs Black, Miesea O. Nightrngale, E. Ives, and AL Ritchie. Tli© pianist was Miss _ Gwitha \ oung. A special meeting of the lieeston Town Board was held to consider plans for the proposed now office and station. Cbmmisaiosier A. J. kray presided. The Bite for the new buildings is on the section where the library now stands. The plans submitted by Mr G. Rodgers were approved, and it was decided to invite tenders for the budding. The Clerk reported that applications had been received for £3UUO of the Board's £4OOO loan. An order had been placed for a Dennis fire engine, which it was djpected would be delivered in about ten weeks' time. It was agreed) that specifications for sumps for fire-fighting purposes should bo prepared and that tinders be invited tor constructing 80 chains of street channelling.
LITTLE RIVER. A meeting of the Banks Peninsula Collie Dog Club was held at the Coronation library on Thursday. Present: Messrs H. Chapman (chairman), 8. W. Birdling, W- A- Fairweather. J. Murphy, R. Fahey, J. McQueen,G. Cradock, J. Palmer, Geo. Breitmeyer, secretary. Allotments of special prizes were gone into and it was decided that Messrs Meares' and "Williams' special prize be allotted to dog scoring most points i". Classes I and H., and that Bishop and Go's, special prize be allotted to competitor making most entries. It was decided to hold over the question of the Tuesday evening entertainment till a later meiking.
