UTILITY POULTRY CLUB.

10 THK EDITOR 0? "THE FBESS. Sir,— l was deculv interested in your leport of the New Zealand Utility Poultry Club's, social function held . last nislft, iu which the chairman truly remarked that -cho club was still t, he huh or the poultry world," «•"} that thousands of people relied on it, •''» believed that only the hues, and mpsreliable inlormation was given out. ji c thanks of those thousands is due to tie Club, for the supply or valuable ad reliable information, and to _ J- « Press" for the way they have in thlsmorning's issue detailed the experience gained fiom the Club's activities at the Papanui ega-laying competition during the last contest. It occurs to me that the average number or eggs laid by the varieties contesting is a more important demonstration of superiority than the performance of a phenomenon of any particular breed. In this connexion an anomaly appears, for while the prize list contains recognition of merit m many directions, and while the Club evidently consider it to be part of the inlormation thousands are waiting tor, to know the birds or breeds putting up the best average, the performers shown to bo superior do not participate in any recognition. The Club seems to have failed in appreciating the value of the best average of eggs produced, which ranges from 131 eggs of less than two ounces to 21G 2-3 eggs weighing J.faU ounces each per bird, the last being the average laving of the White Runner ducks. The average of all competitors, fowls and ducks, numbering 424 birds, is 174 5-G eggs each. At the last young bird show, a local Press critic stated that the ducks were mostly Runners, and that the Whites pleased him most. Perhaps lie can explain why best averages are missing from the prize-list.—Yours, etc., ONK OF THE THOUSANDS. April 22nd. i
