MOTOR VEHICLES.
SECESHT SEGISTRATJONS
The returns of the number of vehicles registered in the Dominion up to and including March 31st. 15)23, as reported to the latest meeting of. the 'Highway* Board, »ro nt sight inclined to convcv jv false impression.
Tho return showed tho North Iblauy registrations to amount to GO,SS6, nml those in the South to 38.847. There* can be no confusion respecting these figures, but the position is not at nil clear when set out in detail. ton, for instance, is shown os having 15,804 vehicles registered there, vl;. as in Christehurch tho figure is stated to be 15,200. Where the confusion misrht be caused is in assuming that the figures represented the vehicles registered in respect Of those cities and their suburbs, whereas it is the postal districts thai are referred to. The Christehurch postal district takes in that portion of tho Province between the Ranccitata in the south and a line drawn from a little to the north of Kaikoura. Besides Christehurh and its suburbs, thp only centres of population the postal district includes are llangiora, Kain.no i, Lyttelton and Ashburton. The Wellington postal district, in addition to- the city and suburbs, takes in the Manawatu district with Pnlmerston North, ' and the Wairarapa district, including such towns as Masterton. Carterton. Orevtown. Featberston, Pahiatua, Feildinc and Woodville. Tho populous Hutt Valley is also included in the Wellington figures.
