The Shaw-Savill Company's steamer Karamea left 'Wellington on Wednesday afternoon for Port Chalmers, to complete discharge of her cargo of rails. The vessel is afterwards to load for Home at Port. Chalmers, Oamaru, Timaru; Wanganui, We lington, .and Auckland,, and is to . sail finally from the last mentioned port on May 16th for London, via Panama.

FIRE IN AENEAS. (ATJSTBALIAN and w.z. cable "association.) CAPE'TOWN,' April 22. The Blue-Funnel liner* Aeneas, 10,058 tens, bound from Australia to London, arrived at Durban with lire raging in the after hold. After two days' fight-, when much of the cargo was removed and tho hold flooded to a- depth of eighteen feet, .the outbreak was extinguished. The d-anvage will amount to between JSIO.OOO and £20,000. SWAYNE AND HOYTE LINE SAILINGS. Tho■ following vessels ■of the- Swayne and Hoyte Lino are reported to have- been fixed to bring' Pacific Coast cargo to New Zealand ports:— . The West Nilus, which was to have left San Francisco on April loth for Auckland, Lyttclton, and Duncdin. Tho West Calera, which is to leave Vancouver on May 7th, and San Francisco on May 13th for Auckland, Wellington, Dunedin, and Sydney.. She-is due at Auckland about Juno 6th. The West Islip is expected to load at Pacific Coast, ports during the second half of June. . She is to sail finally from San Francisco on July Bth. for Auckland, Wellington, and Sydney. The West Cahokia will leave San Francisco on June 10th for Auckland, Lyttelton, Melbourne, and Sydney.

PORT OF LONDON AUTHORITY.

The cabled report, that the Bight Hon. Lord Bitchie of Dundee has been appointed chairman of the Port of London Authority in place of the Bight Honourable Viscount Devonport, P.C., who has resigned, is of interest.. For some years the late chairman has given great work to the Authority,! and carried it through the terribie war era with credit. Lord Bitchio is another able man, son of the first Baron Bitchie, aged 60 years,.so is in his prime. The Authority which consists of 28 members, is an honorary body elected as follows:—One by Admiralty ■, two Board of Trade, four London County Council, two' Corporation.' City of , London, one Trinity House,. eighteen by wharfingers, pay-ers-of dues and'owners of river craft. The Authority looks for no dividends, once interest of bonds 'is met; any profit goes to improvements and reduction of rates.
