♦ The death is reported from London of Madame Olga Novikoff, a Russian political writer. * Signor Mussolini has declared the anniversary of the foundation of Kome, traditionally accepted as April 21st, 753 8.C., shall be a national holiday instead of Labour Day. Tlte Victorian Cabinet has commuted to imprisonment for a long term of years the death sentence passed on William Patrick Marshall for the murder of his wife by placing poison in medicine which had been prescribed for her.
A Rome message says Deputy Farinieci is bringing in a Bill reintroducing the death penalty for murder, but there is little chance of it passing. Signor Mussolini is strongly opposed to the measure on the ground that capital punishment is contrary to r ublic opinion.
Mr Justice Blair has been appointed Chief Justice of Queensland, in succession to the late. Mr Justice McC.nwlcy. The Solicitor-General, Mr W. Webb, will be appointed to the judiciary, and will be made president of the Queensland Arbitration Court.
At Venice, a doctor, while walking in the San Marco Cathedral, heard a baby erring. He traced the sounds to the "tomb of the Doge Morosini, erected in 1260, where he found a baby six daj-s old in the sarcophagus. The news spread quickly, .and a crowd collected in order to lynch the mother, but she could not be'found. The baby was handed over to the nuns.
