OBITUARY.
Mr Grahame Steele (7/129 N.Z.E.F.) who died at Wellington on Saturday after a lengthy illness, had a somewhat adventurous life. He was the youngest son of the late William Johnston.Steele, an English hanker, who spciit'sDtno time in New Zealand in the early days and returned Home. Mr Steele was born at BJackheatb, and after going through college was a bank officer, but, tiring of .this occupation, he went to' Capetown, where ho was eventually connected - with- the Eimbcrley diamond mines. He fought in both the Matabelo and Bechuanaland rebollions, aud when the Boer war broke out, he' joined Rawson's Horse, saw a good deal of fighting, and had the unique experience - of,• being ' with the troops shut ..lip'- with-General White in the siego of Mafeking, which lasted for seven Months,. during-,whieh time; the inhabitants wore nearly starved to death. H© afterwards cam© to New Zealand and settled in South Canterbury and was a member of the South ■'Canterbury CtTps of the Canterbury Monntcd llifies. When the Great War broke out ho at once enlisted and went to the front with the Main Body. Ho was right through Gallipoli, whore he was wounded, and was afterwards in Egypt, being eventually invalided home from there. In 1916 in Dtinedm ho .married a daughter of Mr end Mrs 0. W. Coutts Moon, formerly of Christchurch', now of Wellington, and leaves a widow and a little daughter of eight. His brothers who are liviii" aro Messrs Majoribanks Steele, of Auckland, A.
