SUMNER DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL.
OPENING CEREMONY. Yesterday morning at 9 o'clock, a short opening ceremony took place at the Sumner District High School, where the children with a number of parents and friends, assembled. The headmaster, Mr G. ~. A'.'.eu, welcomed the visitors and asked the chairman, Mr G. A. Alexander, to give the first "lesson." Mr Alexander expressed his great pleasure at being present at the inauguration ceremony. He was glad to know that the secondary department would open with twentyeight scholars and predicted a bright future for the school. The schcol had been fortunate in securing the services of Miss M. Reese, 8.A., and he extended to her a hearty welcome and the good wish.ee of the district. The Mayor (Mr "VV. H. Nicholson) aJso addressed the gathering, and the Rev. W. McAra, the president of the Burgesses' Association, gave a short address on "Capital and Interest," showing how the benefits of the children's education would entirely depend upon tho amount of energy they put into their work. The headmaster thanked the parents preesnt for the honour they did the school by their attendance. Mi*3 Reese -briefly returned thanks for the warm welcome and the good wishes that had been expressed. _ , The proceedings terminated with cheers for Miss Reese and the sinking of the Kational Anthem.
