TIMARU. Social and Personal. Mr and Mrs Frank Petor (Mount pernor*) are back from Chrktehnreh. Mr and Mrs Douglas lc Cren (Bang!tata) ore in Tinmru. Mrs B. L. Orbell (Park lane) left yesterday for Amberiey. Miss E. Dash (Rollestoa street), who has been visiting Sumner and Banglora, has returned to Timnru. Mrs B. H. Rhodes (Sealey street) returned from Wellington on Saturday. Mr and Mrs Sholto Douglas (London) arrived in Timaru yesterday on a short visit.

Mrs James Hay motored through from Christchurch on Monday to spend a few days in Timaru. Mrs E. Biehardaon is on a short visit to Timaru. She will return to England in the Aorangi. Mrs 1\ F. A. Ulrieh (Elizabeth street) returned from Christchurch on Saturdav.

Miss Jean Hay, who was with Mrs H. W. Hay (Sealey street), returned to ChristchuTch on Monday.

Mrs John Ardagh (Christchurch) is the guest of Mrs H. B. Williams (Trafalgar street). Miss Temple (Snrah street) has returned from a visit to Mr and Mrs E. G. Temple (Geraldine). Mr and Mrs P. Martin (Xelson terrace) left yesterday for the north, where they will join the s.s. Tainui, Homeward bound.

Mr and Mrs Gordon Wood (Wai-itl road) left yesterday to spend a. holiday in Christchurch with Mr Walter Mansell (Ri(-carton).

Miss Joyce Gibson motored through from Christchurch on Monday, and was the guest of Mrs Maurice Harper ("Kinnouil") till yesterday, when ahe left for Dunedin.

Whon time for receiving nominations for members of thte Waimate School Committee' expired on Monday, it wa» found that more candidates were offering than are seats to be filled, and as a consequence an election is now necessary. The following have been nominated: —Mrs Pitts, Messrs H. Joliffe, William Eeid, W. P. Wilson, W. F. George, T. g. Mitchell, R, B. Hurst, A. MacLachlan. W. T. Anderson, Garnet Campbell, A. C. Depree, and Rev. J. D. Wilson.

At the shoot of the Willowbridge Miniature Rifle Club on Monday night, the Duncan Button was won' by H. Hayman. At tho annual meeting of the denary Miniature Rifle Club the officers were elected as follows:—President: Mr J.' Andrews, rice-presidents. Mr J. Walker, E. Grimson, and J. Paul; secretary and treasurer, Mr W. N. Gough. officer in, charge of ammunition, Mr N. Andrews: armourer. Mr N. Gibson: delegate to the Waimate Miniature Rifle Association, Mr W. ■N. Gough: committee, officers ex officio and Messrs W. and A. McCulloch, Hi. Jackson, and P. Lindsay.'lt was decided to open the season on Monday.

Tho 50th ai»ual meeting of the Tomuka Fire Brigade was held on Monday evening, Captain J. Henry presiding over a full attendance of members. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year:—Captain, J. Henry (re-elected); lieutenant, J. Allfrey (reelected): secretary, G. Lawry; treasurer, G. Hancox (re-elected); caretaker, "W. Ives; messenger, E. Ives; first branchman, W. Ives; second branchman, "VV. Frisby; lion, eurgeon, Dr. F. A. Scannell.

A large and representative gathering of citizens assembled at the Salvation Army Hall on Monday evening to say "au revoir" to Major and Mrs Armstrong and Miss Armstrong, who are shortly to leave for Eltham. where they will have charge of the Eltham Boys' Home. For tho past fivo years Major Armstrong has been in charge of the local Boys' Home. Captain Bartlett occupied tho cli&ir. He spoke of the splendid work done by Major, Mrs and Miss Armstrong in Temuka. Miss Armstrong had done good work on the teaching staff of tho Boys' Home. .During tho evening items were given bv Captain and Mrs BartJott, Ensign Chard, and Major and Mrs Armstrong. Prior to the public fore-well to Major and Mrs Armstrong representatives of the Business Men's Association of the town and several Councillors gathered, at the Mayor's residence to say farewell. At thc"closc of the function Mr Gimnion handed Major Armstrong a scaled envelope as a token of tho esteem in which ho was held by tho people in Temuka. ISomination for seats on the Temuka School Committee dosed on Monday night. The names of the candidates are a* follows :-rMessrs J. L. Butcher, A. V. Buzan, G. H. Clements, C. L. Fraser, J. Henrv. G. J. Keys.
