ASHBURTON.
PERSONAL. A large and representative gathering of sports enthusiasts met in tho Tinwald Hall on Monday night to honour Mr A. F. MeMurtrie, who is leaving the district. Mr H. J. Millichamp presided, and representatives from various Ashburton Sports Clubs were present. During the evening Mr MeMurtrie was the recipient of a gold medal, inscribed "To Mr A. F. MeMurtrie, from the Tinwald sportsmen." and various musical items were given.
General News. On Anzac Day short services will be held at the South African war memorial in Baring square cast, and the Ashburton cemetery at 10."0 ;i.m. and 11 a.m. respectively. The Hampstead war memorial gates will be officially opened and the memorial tablets unveiled by tho Kcv.. J. F. Wiseman at 1.43 p.». A commemoration sen-ice will be held in the Domain at .1 p.m., at which the Btev. A. G. Irvine will be the chief speaker. The First Canterbury Mounted Eifles, Salvation Army, the Ashburton Pipe Band, and returned soldiers will attend the ceremony. The annual "Poppy Day" collections will be taken up in Ashburton on Friday, when the heaaquartcrs wiil be the Municipal Chambers. A thorough canvass of the town will be made. Longbesch Road Board. At the monthly meeting of the Lorigbcach Road Board; held yesterday, there were present Messrs J. P. McQuilkin (chairman). L. Maginness, W. J. Anderson, A. Moore, and K. Watts. A vote of sympathy was passed with Mr Massey and his family in his sad illness.
Mr Moore reported that tho gorge hedge at the corner of Willowby and Main South roads •was overgrown, and it was resolved that the occupier bo asked to lower, the fence. The clerk was appointed inspector. It was decided that culverts be placed over the fords on Poplar road, and the road from McKcndry's to Watertoa be graded. The annual meeting of ratepayers was set down for Mav 4th.
RAKAIA.
The monthly meeting of the South Bakaia School Committee was held in St. Mark's schoolroom on Monday evening. There were "present: Rev. A. S. Morrison (chairman), Rev. E. Is'. Blakiston, Messrs W. Cromio, J. England, A. P. Kennett, A. A. Oliver, and C. Evison. The Educati&n Beard wrote confirming the appointment cf Miss I. South as assistant-mistress. The head teacher's report showed that good work -was boing done by tho pupils iu tho correspondence lessons. Miss South had commenced work at ' the school. The head teacher desired to thank the committee for kindness extended to him. A letter was received from the Canterbury School Committees' Association, stating the objects of the-Asso-ciation. It was decided to hand the letter to the new committee. A meeting of the Ladies' Guild of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church was held in the schoolroom on Monday afternoon. As the restrictions on the assembling of children have not yet been lifted, it was decided io postpone the bazaar, which was to have been hold on Thursday, until tho first week of June. It was decided to meet every Wednesday until the bazaar is held. Owing to the lateness of the season and the difficulty of obtaining plants, it was resolved to have no flower stall at the bazaar this year. This year verbal nominations at the annual meeting of householders will be accepted for the School Committee.
MAYPIELD. A meeting of the Anglican Building Confmittee was held in Mayfield on Monday, April 21st, and it was agreed to accept the tendor of Mr Heys, of Timara, to erect the new Anglican Church and Sunday School. The building will be quite a simple one in wood, designed by Mossrs Turnbull and Rule, Timaru. It will fill a much-needed want. It is hoped to put the work in hand with no possiblo delay, owing to tho approach of winter. About £l5O is still required if there is to be no debt.
METHVEN. _' Tiie.judging in connexion with the Methven A. and P. Association's Annaual Stacking Competition was conducted on Monday. Owing to tho difficulty of obtaining a judge from outside tho district, a. committee of fivo judges from the Association was appointed to do the work. Points were awarded as follows: —General safetv 50; roof 20, eaves 10, butt 10, and general appearance 10. The results are as follows:—Oats: Pi. Chambers, Lyndhurst. 98 points, Ist. A. Campion, Ban-hill, 96 points, 2nd. R. Chambers, Lyndhurst, BIJ8 l J points, 3rd. Wheat: R. Chambers, Lyndhurst, 87 points, Ist. 11. Chambers, Lyndhurst. 76 points, 2nd. R. J. Low, Highbank, 70 points, 3ra. The members of the Ploughing Match Committee, Messrs R. J. Low, J. Campbell, A. Geddis. R. W. Elliott, E. A. Bland. C. Hall, J. Watson. G. Kelly, J. R. Dalton, and A. 1\ Lilley met at the conclusion of the A. and P. Association meeting. Considerable, discussion took place as to the venue of land likely to be offered for the plougliing match. It was decided to ask each member of the committee to canvass the area in which he lived, to sort out suitable paddocks and report to a meeting to be held on May 4th, at 9 a.m.
HINDS. The first meeting of the newly constituted branch of the Fanners' Union was held in the hall on Monday evening, when there was a large attendance of farmers. Mr H. Wills occupied the chair. Mr D. Clements, of the Ealing branch, attended and gave a large amount of useful information. It was decided to write to the Railway Department urging them to provide electric light at the railway station, and to erect a. verandah. An interesting discussion on manures and their uses was contributed to by many farmers. PENDARVES. * Much sympathy will be extended to Mr and Mrs S. Long, of "Derry Lin," Pendarves, who recently lost their only daughter, of about-two years of age, after a short illness. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon at the As Liburton Cemetery.
