NORTH CANTERBURY.

RANGIORA. At the Rangiora Magistrate's Court yesterday afternoon, before Messrs \> • A. Rowse andV. I. Jennings. J.P-'- c . Wl1 " liam Smith, alias William Henry Cox, pleaded guilty to the. theft of an overcoat, the property of W. B. Crothers, valued at £-5, and was convicted and sentenced to one. month's imprisonment with hard labour.

In connexion with the Anzae Day sen-ices, the committee of the Returned soldiers' Association has arranged for a procession of returned soldiers, territorials, and cadets, borough and county councillors, fire brigades, church choirs, and friendly societies. The procession will assemble in Victoria street, opposite the Drill Hall, and. headed by the band, will march to the Fallen Soldiers' Memorial in High street, where wreaths will be deposited and the service held. The service will be conducted by the ministers of the local churches, the address being given by the Rev. C. Blair. • There was a good attendance at the regular meeting of the Loyal Rangiora Lodge, M.U., 1.0.0. F., held on-Monday evening, over which Bro. R. A. Scott presided. The secretary of the Loyal Woodend Lodge wrote, accepting the challenge for a cards match, and advising that April 30th was the most suitable date. It was resolved to hold the church parade at the Anglican Church on May 10th, and- to invite the Brass Band to head the procession. An application for payment of a maternity bonus was granted, and sick pay and accounts amounting to £3l 16s 2d were passed for payment. One honorary member was initiated.

Yesterday was observed-as "Poppy Day," and the poppies allotted to Eangiora were all disposed of early in the afternoon, the sum of £45 5s being taken. Owing to the indisposition of the Mayoress, Mrs W. A. Rowsc, the arrangements were in charge of the Deputy-Mayoress, Mrs C. I. Jennings, who had a large staff of assistants. At a special meeting of the Eangiora County Council held yesterday, Cr. H. Tallott was elected to the chairmanship rendered vacant by. the retirement of Cr. F. Horrell, who has been chairman for many years. Mr Horrell has removed into the Eangiora borough. The clerk, Mr J. Marshall, and the chairman were appointed representatives to the conference-of local bodies to be held in Christchurch to-day to discuss the motor-tax.

The monthly meeting of. the committee of the Bowling, Tennis, and Croquet Club was held on Monday night. The president, Mr E. Mcintosh, was in the chair, and there were also- present Messrs W. E. Barwick, A. E. Lockhart, A. E. Golding, R. H. Bailey, W. E. Barton, L. W. Me.nzies, C. J. Wood,-T. W. Ambrose, and W. A. Bowse. The resignation of Mr A. E. Holcroft was received and accepted. Sectional reports were received, and deemed very satisfactory. Tho treasurer's statement showed receipts for the month £27 ISs Od and payments £22 15s 3d, and the bank debit balance £137 19s Cd. The treasurer also reported that subscriptions amounting to £4O 15s Gd were still outstanding. The treasurer was instructed to notify several' members who were two years in arrears with their subscriptions that their names would be struck off the; rolls if the amounts 'were not paid within one month. • "■■.''

EAIAPOI. : The annual parishioners'.meeting >iit connexion with' St. Bartholomew's Church, Kaiapoi, ,was heljl.on Monday evening. The ; vicar,, the Kev. J. T. Paddison, presided, and submitted a detailed report on tho church work for the past year. He expressed his appreciation of the assistance received from church members, and. committees, and several votes of thanks to church workers were carried. On the motion of the chairman it was decided that a message of sympathy should be forwarded to Mr J. Bfoadley on the death of his wife. CHEVIOT. At the public meeting held in the Spotswood Hall on Saturday evening last, it was decided to hold over the election of a committee to control the Hall affairs. The matter will be dealt wtih at a meeting to be held this week. The Cheviot Football Club held itsfirst practice of the season on Saturday, and a large number of players turned out, including some new players, who should prove useful additions to the club's teams. 'Hie first sub-union competition match is to be played on May 16th, when the Hanmer junior, team will visit Cheviot. Arrangements for the observance of Anzac Day have been completed, and the programme is as follows: —In the morning there will be a ceremony at the Memorial at Spotswood, and. in the afternoon a memorial service will beheld in the Cheviot Public Hall, at which the loqal ministers will take part. HORORATA. The weather still continues to ho unsettled. The raiu of last week will have done incalculable beenfit, as both root crops and pastures •were- badly in need of a good soaking. Altogether 426 points of rain-were-recorded up to Friday, and a further 12 points fell on Saturday night. The rivers are all running high,, and.it will .probably be some time before, the Selwyn.is again fordable." . HALSWELL. A large- crowd of supporters were present in the Domain on Saturday, when Halsnell B football team defeated Varsity. B. by 11 to 3, made up'in three tries scored by L. Dew, 0. Cox, and A. Cox. and one converted by A. Cox. The weather was excellent, but the ground damp and soft. The third series of euchre and dance socials was held iu the -Hall on Saturday night. KAIKOURA. It has been decided to hold a nnited memorial service ot- the Garden of Memories on Ansae Day, the Kaikoura Orchestral Society assisting. Cable advice has been received that T>r. R. L. Withers will leave by the Runpcliu from London 011 May 2nd. Dr. Withers has been in Kngland and Scotland in connexion with his profession for tho past eighteen, months. Mr and Mrs Thomas Pope, who have been on a visit to friends in the Old Country, arrived in Auckland on Sunday, and are expected in Kaikoura next week.

In the final for the cup presented by the president of the Bowling Club (Mr James Davidson - ), Messrs Q'.ielch, Davidson, Wilson, and Collins (substitute for 0. E. Gates) defeated Murray, Barry, Washington, and Walter by 29 to 14.

Croquet has received a fillip this season, thanks to the keen interest taken by Messrs A. Gooeh and F. Rnsmussen, why have looked after the lawn and generally supervised matters for the ladies. On Saturday a tournament was concluded. Mesdames Mcßay and Parker defeated Mesdames Hodgson and-Murray, and Mrs Hodgson and Mr Rasmussen defeated Mesdames Collins and Trudgeon, also Miss Gibson and Mr Gooeh, and in the final Mr Rasmusseri defeated Mrs Hodgson and won the trophy. He was heartily congratulated on his win. , '

Master J. Harnett, who was the victim of a trap accident last week, is progressing well at tho Kaikoura Hospital.

A quiet wedding took place at Kaikoura on Monday morning, when Miss Iris Clark (daughter of Mr A. B. Clark, Kaikoura) was married to Mr Henry Clarke. A/ter the ceremony the newly-wedded couple' left for the North to spend the honeymoon at Rototuu. Mr and Mrs Clarke will, likely., take up their residence in Auckland, after a.trip to Ireland. The Government Las purchased a further block. of. land from Mr S.'Andrew,., of "Fernleigh," making in all G79{ acres, the price paid being in the vicinity of £17,000. The land is a particularly fine block, suitable for dairying and sheep, and will be subdivided into seven sections and balloted for in June next.

Mr Albert Smith had the misfortune to lose his trotting mare Eliza Dalton on Saturday, the animal contracting pneumonia. The mare had engaged for two events at tho Marlborough Autumn Meeting. She also ran two seconds at the Kaikoura Trotting Meeting. A. team of Kaikoura footballers paid a visit to Oxford on Saturday, and suffered defeat by nine points to nil. The fishing industry is suffering at present owing to tho freezer being out of action. It is likely that electric power will be utilised for the freezer at ari early date. Transport has been another difficulty acting against the industry. Mild weather has been experienced here sinco the storm of tho previous week.

AKAROA. The new Hospital opened in June of last year is to have a much-needed addition in the shape of a Nurses' Home. At. its last meeting the North Canterbury Hospital' and Charitable Aid Board voted a grant of £SOO for the purpose, this being mainly the outcome of representations made by. the local member, Mr Geo. Armstrong. At Eastertime, Mrs Herbert, one of the lady triembers of the Board, and Miss Muir, 4 niatron ; of the Christchurch Hospital,' were' deputed by the Board to make an inspection of the Akaroa Hospital, and. report upon the matter 1 The decision, of the Board has given great satisfaction in *the town, hiAre. particularly ■tp the nursing staff, several of whorrt have had, to use the old building; fire minutes' 'walk away, as their quarters. ..'■../;.

"Arrangements have been .-/iiade. -to commemorate Anzac Day in a fitting manner. A united commemoration service will beheld around'the Peninsula War Memorial on Saturday afternoon. The chief speakers -will be two prominent members of the Christchurch Returned Soldiers' Association. The religious ' portion ! of the service -will be conducted by Revs. A. C. Purchas (Anglican) and F. J. Tylee (Presbyterian). If'the weather is unfavourable, the gathering will be held in the Oddfellows' Hall. The Town Clerk has received from the R.S.A. a parcel of 250 'poppies, which will be.sold, in the district, with the request that each buyer should wear the flower on Anzac Day, as a tribute to fallen The proceeds will be devoted to the fund for providing work for unemployed returned men during the winter.

Owing to the epidemic restrictions being still in force, the executive of the Duvauchelle Sports Club.has decided'to postpone its annual sports meeting, fixed for, to-morrow. The rainfall recorded at Akaroa during last week's storm . totalled . 9.14 inches. Of this 8.25 inches fell- in the twenty-four hours ended at 10 a.m. on Friday.

LE BON'S BAY* . .The heavy downpour which fell continuously for about 36 hours last Thursday and Friday caused' several severe slips round the> Bay! The worst were on the Summit road, and the mail car was forced to make a very circuitous route on Saturday. .-■ It did not get through at all on Friday. Some farmers have had whole fences taken away with slips. The remains of the temporary bridge w r hich was partially dismantled some time ago were washed right away and probably some valuable timber is now out at sea. The new bridge has sunk on one side. The piles have been merely laid on'the creek bed, and any big flood is liable to •undermineit. The road between, the Bay and Akaroa, although in a rough condition, was open the whole time. The road between the Bay and Duvauchelles will probably be open in a day." SPRINGSTON SOUTH. A team from the United Football Club played a team from the Riccarton Club on the Domain on Saturday afternoon. After a very even game Riccarton proved the winners by 11 points to 9. Those who scored for the winners were F. Holmes, L. Raxworthy, and J. McGovem, and A. Wilson converted Holmes's try. M. Cox 3nd H. Hoskins scored for the losers and D. Walker kicked a 1 penalty goal. Mr.J. Simpson rcfereed the game. Rainfall for Thursday and Friday last week was over four inches. Potato-digging is becoming general. Miss Burns, needlework supervisor, gave an address on needlework in schools, and allied subjects such as knitting, explaining what was being done in England. At Tuesday's meeting Miss Bcattie dealt with the subject of reading and cpanting, and based her talk on the "Line Reader" system, as initiated by Miss Baster and Professor Shelley, to the system of the New Beacon Readers.. The social. afternoon, which was to have been held at the vicarage on Thursday, has been postponed owing to the non : arrival of the certificates which j were to be presented that day. , ■ - - - -'

SEFTON. The annual meeting of the Sefton Miniature Rifle Club was held, in the Rink Hall. Mr Geo. Clarke presided over a good attendance. The following officers were elected for the; v. ensuing year:—President, Mr James Ashworth, jun.: vice-presidents, Messrs A. Ashwortlv and G. Clarke; captain, Mr P. Topp; vice-captain, Mr G. Withers; bandicapper, captain, vice-captain, and secretary. The secretary was instructed to write to Mr J. Ash-worth, jun., sending the best wishes of the club for a speedy, recovery from the illness ■which keeps him in-hospital.- Mr H.,F. Thomson, "who has been a member of the club from its inception, taking an active part in its activities, was elected a life member. On Monday night the committee or the Sefton Public Library met in the Reading Room. Present: Mr P. JThorne (chairman), Mesdames Thorn© and Bovoe and Messrs F. H. Ford. G. N. McNally. A. M. Dalzell, Geo. Clarke, and A. Withers. A letter was received from Mr G. W. Forbes; M.P., stating that he was making enquiries when the Government subsidy would be allotted this year. It was decided that photographs of the oridket and football teams, given by Mr H. F.Thomson, be hung in the reading-rroom. A meeting of the delegates of the North Canterbury Rugby Sub-Union met on Monday night in the Domain pavilion, Mr A. Cameron, president, being chairman. The secretary reported that he had received, entries from six senior teams and seven junior ones, Woodend Club being the only one to enter a junior team alone.

TAI TAPU. On Sunday last the Rev. T. J. Wallis, who has been appointed Methodist minister of the Tai Tapu circuit preached at the morning and evening services. Mrs Christian sang a solo, and Mr J. Gilmour intimated that a social to welcome the Rev. T. J. Wallis and his family to the church and district would be held in the schoolroom on Thursday evening. Harvest thanksgiving services were conducted in St. Paul's Church on Sunday morning by the Rev. Wilson, and in the evening by Mr A. Smithcr, of Lincoln. The church was prettily decorated for the occasion by the ladies of the congregation, and appropriate hymns were sung. Mrs J. J. Willan presided at the organ. The heavy rain which fell during the end of last week will do good to pasture lands. Farmers have commenced digging the main potato crop. At the annual meeting "of the Presbyterian Church, held.in the, hall, at which the Rev. F. Robertson presided, it v/as decided. to hold the annual social as soon as the Health Officer gives permission for children to 'attend gatherings. TEMPLETON. Last week a large number of friends and members met in the. Templeton Methodist Church to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs Hansen and family, who are about'to leave'the'district. The Rev. J. W. Parker presided. The Bible Class presented Miss Hansen, through their leader. Mr S. McMillan, with quaint cruet set. Mr ■Blakely, superintendent of the Islington Sunday School, also made a presentation of a beautiful picture to Mr and Mrs Hansen, as an expression of sympathy with him in the unfortunate accident Mr Hansen met with in takine the children on. a picnic to Kairaki beach on New Year's Day. Miss Hansen, and Mr Hansen suitably replied.
