It appears from old records tliat matinee performances at theatres on Saturday afternoons owe their origin to the University Boat Race. The .first were tried as an experiment by the iate Mr J. Hollingshead at the Gaiety Theatre, and were called: "Boat Race Matinee Performances," and they were attended by crowds of sedate business men, sporting, rosettes of their favourite blue so huge that the "wearers were almost dwarfed by them. Meeting his creditors at the London Bankruptcy Court, Reece Ernest Cole, a florist, said he had just, been renounced as the winner of a foStball competition £IOOO prize. Jho Official Receiver intimated that he would delay applying to adjudicate the debtor bankrupt in order that lie might have an opportunity of paying his debts.
