NEW COURTS. St. ANDREW'S HILL. On Saturday a meeting of the promoters of the new Mount Pleasant Tennis and Croquet Club was held at the residence of Mr J. S. Middleto'n, when ,the following officials were electedl'atron, Mr George Humphries; vice-patrons, Messrs A. R. Morten, Colonel Hobday, and J. S. Middletoil; president, Mr B. Riley; vice-presi-dents. Messrs F. H. Gale, Peter Troiove, and J. Fuller; committee, Mts Canon, Mrs le Queane, and Met era W. de Thier, Wil-liam*,-Edmonds, and Thomas. It waa decided to proceed with the calling for tenders for the preparation of a site adjacent to' the St. Andrew's Hill subdivision, and the question as to whether. the first courts to be laid down should be - asphalt or chip ■waa left in the hands of the committee. A considerable amount of money has already been subscribed by the promoters. PHOTOGRAPHERS EXCLUDED. (■* CABL* —PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT.) (AUST&ALIAK AND JT.Z. CABLE ASSOCIAUOH.) (Received April 20th, 8.10 pjn.) LONDON, April 20. Press photographers were excluded from the hard court tennis championships at Torquay. It is understood the Lawn Tennis Association, has taken this action on account of. undesirable photographs of women players appearing in newspapers.. _ The photographers are asking whether this prohibition will extend to Wimbledon and other big tournaments.
■ The question whether - the whole human race sprang from Adam and Eve was raised by Dr. Lotsy diving his address to Victoria College students last ■week on the subject of evolution. "When in a recent discussion I expressed considerable doubt of white men being able to acquire a black skin* under any cirumstances, I was answered that what might not be possible in a short period might happen in a period extending over millions of years," he remarked. "This conception I consider erroneous. The black skin is either a necessity to man living in' Africa, or it is not. If it is, acquisition after some millions of years is an impossibility, because those who have acquired it would have died before they got get so remote a progeny, and if it is not they will never acquire it according to Lamarck's doctrine."
Without the Press, says Sir Oliver Lodge, who ought to know, men of science would be taking in one another 's washing. It is not certain that this necessity might not be to tho ultimate advantago of the human race. For scientists, compelled to turn their great brains to the work, might eventually evolve the perfect laundry, in which buttonholes would never bo torn, shirts would always be starched in the right place, and collars would never be folded the wrong way.
