A. novel and somewhat startling experience befell one of the_ Carterton bowlers who went to the Nelson tourney, states the Carterton paper. On the Saturday night he dropped his bowling hat on to the washstand m his bedroom. On Sunday the party went for a motor drive. On returning to his room "in the dusk of the twilight," he went to get a drink of water from tho water-bottle on the washstand. Taking hold of the glass, it broke in his hand, and the fragments fell upon hii hat. He took hold of that, and to hi 3 astonishment grasped only a handful of ashes. Investigation followedj and it was seen that the hat had been near the glass water-bottle, which had evidently huppened, at some time of tho day, to be in a direct lino with the sun's rays, and, acting as a magnifving-glass, had set fire to the hat. Tho heat frolrt the burning hat had shattered the tumbler, and also burned through the cloth covering the washstand, and charred the wood, but fortunately did not meet with any easily inflammable material, and died out without bursting into flame.
The recent storm was not without its humorous incidents (writes dur Akaroa correspondent) at "rounding-up" time. For instance, on one dairy farm on Thursday morning one cow was missing from the herd. "Carried, away by tlio flooded creek!" was the conclusion reached by the menFolk after a hurried look around had failed to reveal her, and the farmer mentally debited another item against the _ hand of Fate. Later on in the morning, however, the missing one was found, alive, comparatively dry and snug and complacently chewing her cu<i in the roomy iowlhcmse.
