i THE ROYAL ARCADE CASE.
i to thz iditob or "thi russ." j Sir, —In your issue of the 17th inst. [ you publish a report of a case, Alfred i M. Hill versus Charles Ireland, in ro- ■ speet of the horse Koyal Arcade, disqualified after his purchase, by Hill , from Ireland.
j In tlie course of your report Kelsey ! is dlleged to' have stated that ' '.He had j enquired from the Trotting Association I why Ireland had been disqualified/' but tfie Association would not tell him, and the disabilities had not been lifted, j Before he mado the purchase lie went j to a representative of the Trotting As- ! sociation, who told him there was nothing to prevent him from buying tho horse. He bought the hors.e, and the .Association accepted the transfer"; I aud, later, you report that the Magistrate "commented upon the Trotting Association's action in not telling Kelsey why Ireland had been disqualified." So far as the Association isi concerned, the facts are these:—
; In June or July last W. Kelsey was j negotiating to purchase Royal Arcade from C. Ireland, of Methven. Kelsey is believed to have .bcCn in Christchurch from May to August. He callod at the office, and, as far as can be remembered, he asked if he could the horse, and if a transfer would be granted. Thero was nothing to prevent him buying the horse. At this time Clias. Ireland's case was being enquired into. Kelsey seemed to be under the impression that Ireland would bo disqualified, and re--fcrred to that possibility. No member o£ the clerical staff had any information they could give, as tfee Board was dealing with the case, and making enquiries. No decision luul then been come to. ■* Kelsey quite understood the position, because only a fev days ago he stated ho realised t'uti Association could tell him nothing, as he had been informed at thp time (not by any member of my staff, I should :;aj ) that Ireland might, be disqualified. Kelsey also clearly knew he was buying the horse at his own risk. As soon as the Board came to its decision the same was published iii the report of the proceedings in all -local papers, including your own, and was at once notified iq ' the / Official Calendar, the "N.Z. Referee, '' as provided for by the N.Z. Rules of Trotting. , . The Association has not "accepted the transfer," as Kelsey is reported as having stated in evidence. Ho lodged tho application with a member of the staff, and it came up in due course at the first meeting of tho Board for consideration, but the transfer did not ~gb J through.
After the Board had come to its deck sion, Mr A. M. Hill was sent advico t6 his address in Auckland that Charles Ireland had been disqualified, and that Royal Arcade, being owned by Ireland at tho time of liis offence, was not qualified to start under the New Zealand Rules of Trotting. Had a member of my staff been called in tho case, a deal of misapprehension might have been avoided.—Yours, etc., J. B. NORRIS, Secretary, N.Z, Trotting Association. ' Christchurch, April 20th.

DEMOSTHENES DEAD. A ca'olo message from Sydney yesterday reported the death nt Mr P. Miller's Kia Ora • Stud, New South "Wales, of DemoSthenos, -who, when racing in England, wap a high-class racefliorso, and when imported to New Zealatd by tha late Mr (i. P." Donnelly became one of the best sires in the Dominion for some time. Demcsthenai camo from a highly successful line, being by Desmond, a eon of St. Simon, from Carlin, by br Petiarch —Ambuscade, fmra Crossfire, a daughter at Vedette. It was little wonder that with such high breeding, backed by "merit as a racehorse, Demosthenes should iquicklv rtaoh the head of the winning siios' list," whioh ho did after his stock liad been racing h:t« only four seasons. In their iirst eeison on tho Turf in New Zealand hit soris rpid daughters put, together £2825, and in tho second season he \w.s- third vn tho lat with £8753 bssids his name. Ho :05c fco second pluce in his third «sa?.cn with £16,498, and in tho next amassed the fine total of £?7,756. iCia rext Iwo seasons netted i' 24,699 and £19,530 rfspcclively. He was sold to go to Austialia fcr 5000 guineas a few seasons ago, but, apart from Golden Voice, had not kept up the reputation he established here. Ho produced two-year-old winners, but his name is more leadiiy recalled when riier-tion is made of such good stayers aS Amvthas, Karo, Gasbag. Afterglbw, and Dui. Amylhas -;an efcsily be placed, on a plane with the greatcat hopses ever l-aced in the Dom'nion. Demoft-thent-s also left a host of other good petformers, including Deuoa.lion, Radiant Light. Hetaua, Truthful. Simonides. Demos, Impediment, Delight, Dialogue, and Early Uawn, H« also left successful hurdlers and cross-country horses, of which Chrysoitoin and Kiplin j may be mentioned. Haze, who ha>? recentlv registcrsd a' sequence of 6etfe onds without being fortunate in winning k liice, is a son of Demosthenes, and the successful Auckland-trained two-year-o;d King's Speech is another. It is rather early to say that Demosthenes will not yet have something representing him in Australia, quite as good as his Tirsgenv have been in New Zealand, for he has had good opportunities at Mr Miller's stud. He cot Go!den Voicenow a three-year-old—in his first season in Vus'ral ; a and tliouch a not altogether Suva foaJ-gcttcr, his death will be a heavy loss to his owner who, it. is stated, paid £OOO guineas for him.
