SEAMEN'S INSTITUTE, LYTTELTON.
TO EDITOR OF "THE PBESS." Sir, —The report furnished to the Methodist Synod by the port missioner regarding the activities of the Seamen's Institute contains figures which, lacking explanation, can hardly be accepted as accurate bv those who claim to know something about Lyttelton and the sailornien of the port. 'Passing oVer with an amusod smile the 12.000 seamen said to have visited the Institute last year, and the 6000 letters stated to have been dealt with during that period, it is impossible to treat as serious the assertion that 796 flee beds and meals -were provided during the year. The great- bulk of sailors are a decent lot of men, and where the 796 "dossers'' and "cleadbeats" came from is a puzzle to those who make the Sailors' Home their headquarters while in Lyttelton. These genuine sailors would like to learn from what ships these "down and outers" landed. Certainly their presence in the port was not noticed. Whence came thev? —Yours, etc., " SAILOR BOY. November 22nd, 1924.
