RAILWAY EXCURSIONS.
OPENING OF THE SEASON. The railway excursion season is to be opened on Saturday next in real earnest with an excursion to Timai'u. The railway authorities have been interesting themselves in certain matters, outside their control, that arc of considerable importance and interest to excursionists. It was complained, in connexion with excursions to Timaru last season, that visitors from Christchurch were chargetl rather exorbitant prices for meals in Timaru. Tiie railway authorities have interviewed caterers in Timaru on the subject and as the result of enquiries they haive been assured that a good lunch will be available for eighteenpence. At Caroline Bay hot water for picnic parties will be available at a reasonable price. While in Ashburton last week, the District Traffic Manager, Mr H. Chapman, saw the County Clerk, and advised him that the excursion from Ashburton to Otira on December 6th will be run by the Department without a guarantee and as an experiment. When the excursion was first proposed the Department asked the County Council to give a guarantee, but that body was not in a position to give it.
