Dunedin Exhibition.
It is distinctly gratifying that Christchurch is going to be worthy of itself in the matter of the Dunedin Exhibition. When the question was before our readers two or three weeks ago wo expressed concern lest the attitude of the Industrial Society should Jbe regarded in Dunedin as the attitude of a large section of this city. But the reception of tho Southern delegates last night removes all anxiety. Tho business people of Christchurch not only wish Dunedin well, but wish Christchurch well also, and are wise enough to sec that in helping their neighbours they are equally helping themselves. The setting up of so large and so representative a local coriimittee will give .order and adequacy to the Canterbury exhibit, but it will especially give the people of Dunedin confidence again in the friendliness and common-sense of their neighbours. And it is worth repeating what Mr J. S. Barrett said recently in our correspondence columns after a visit to Dunedin, viz., that the energy and initiative of the people of Dunedin in connexion with the Exhibition are an example to all other cities. | Those who know what the Exhibition site is now, what it is fast becoming, and what it so recently was, will have a good deal of confidence in tho ability of tho directors of the Exhibition itself to make it worthy of the support of the whole Dominion. In any case it is important that the two chief centres of the South Island should do everything they can for each other, and it is a stimulating circumstance for both that wool, which accounts for so much of their prosperity, should now be bringing such high prices. If the exhibit of the Federation of British Industries comes up to expectations, and Japan also has a Court, there will be no lack of stimulus to local manufacturers, and some very interesting comparisons for local consumers; but the point is that Dunedin, which to-day has a smaller population than any of the other chief cities, has had the courage and the foresight to build so broad and high and strong.
