PERMANENT DEFENCE STAFF.

* REFRESHER COURSE AT BURNHAM. The whole of the permanent- Defence staff of the South Island, consisting of fifty-five officers and n.c.o.'s, goes into camp at Burnham to-day for a fortnight's "refresher" course. The camp commandant will be Major S. C. P. Nicholls, D.5.0., and Captain Satherthwaite, of Dunedin, will be the adjutant. Colonel E. Young, C.8., C.M.G., D.5.0., will also be present. The instructional staff is as follows:—lnfantry training, Major P. H. Bell, D.5.0.; musketry* Lieut.-Colonel X. W. B. Thorns, D.5.0.; tactics and topography, Major E. A. Row, D.5.0.; physical and recreational training, Captain N. McD. Weir; artillery, Captain A. B. Williams, D.S.O. After the Burnham Camp, the staff officers will go to Springfield - for a three days' course in tactics.
