THE TRAMWAYS.
* PRESENT BOARD'S FINAL MEETING. The Tramway Board met yesterday afternoon. Present: Messrs H. Pearce (acting-chairman), Geo. T. Booth, J. A. Flesher, D. Svkes, W. J. Walter, S. A. Staples, and the Hon. J. Barr. The Canterbury Industrial Association wrote thanking the Board for its courtesy and assistance to the Association in connexion with Industries Week, which had gone a long way to make the week a success from the industrialists' point of vi'ew. It .was decided to accede to the request of the Eedcliffs Regatta Committee for the customary bonus for increased traffic.
Mr J. J. Dougall wrote that the survey of Mr Maffey's land had been approved by the Surveyor-General, and one copy had been forwarded to the UnderSecretary for Public Works so that the amending Order-iri-Council could be put through.
Mr Booth said that, in view of the meeting being the last of the Board as at. present constituted, he thought they should expre'ss'their appreciation of the services rendered, by the acting-chair-man. He moved to that effect.
Mr Barr seconded, and said that all agreed that Mr Pearce had carried out his duties most satisfactorily on behalf of the Board and. the general public. The motion was carried by acclamation, and Mr Pearce briefly acknowledged it. The chairman referred to the fact that Messrs S. A. Staples and J. W. Beanland were not seeking re-election to the Board, and moved: "That the Board place on record its appreciation of the services of Messrs Staples and Beanland whilst members of the Board." Mr Barr seconded, and he and Messrs Sykes, Booth, and. Walter spoke in eulogy of the services rendered by the retiring members. Mr Flesher said that the Riccarton district could not have had a more faithful, more zealous, or more painstaking member" than Mr Staples had been. Mr fiirples, in acknowledging the motion, which was carried by acclamation, said that they had had their differences on the Board, but he had always left them behind him when he went out of the board room. It was not quite his intention to go out of public life, but he felt that a member of the Tramway Board, if he desired to do justice to the district he represented, must attend every meeting, and it would not be fair to the Riccarton district if he were absent for three months in the year. He expressed his appreciation of the courtesy extended to hini by members of the Board, the general manager, the engineer, and the whole 4 staff.
