COLLAPSE OF WHARF.
COMMISSION SITS AT AUCKLAND. (PBI!J9 ASSOCIATION TXLEGBAM.) AUCKLAND, November 24. Tho Commission of Enquiry into tho collapse of the Western "Wharf on October 28th, involving damage estimated at £20,000, opened to-day. The Commissioners are Messrs F. W. Furkert, Public Works Chief Engineer, and C. J. E. Williams, engineer to the Lyttelton Harbour Board. Before the evidence was taken, the chairman of the Harbour Board urged the fullest investigation and assured the Commission that reference to negligence in the order of reference included lack of foresight. Two witnesses were examined, Mr Hamer, engineer to the Board, and Mr D. Holderness', assistant engineer. Each expressed the' opinion that the construction of tho wharf had been thorough and that concrete could not have been improved upon. Mr Hamer was of the opinion, that the, collapse was probably due to a soft pocket of silt described as "greasy back." Mr Holderness expressed the emphatic opinion that the bank under the rubble wall, alongside the wharf, must [have moved forward as a whole, taking several piles with it.
