GREYMOUTH BOROUGH. .(«F«CIAI. TO "TH» PMBS. ') • GREYMOUTH, November- 23. An active campaign of street improvement is under way in Greymouth, the kerbing and footpaths receiving attention. Albert street is now employing the Council's workmen. The Borough sprinkler was., out yesterday for the first time for several years, alleviating the dust nuisance. Mining Matters. Mr C. X. Taylor, of the North Brunner Collieries, Ltd., is now in. Napier, and will shortly complete a tour of the principal towns of the North Island, where he is placing shares in the company's mining proposition on the market.- Auckland- investors . have contributed a substantial proportion of the capital, but shares are being taken up in Australia, and the amount of money for the venture in Brainier, Blackball,, and Eunanga is stated to be very gratifying.
- The "Blackball miners are experiencing a* busy time, and the colliery is working without interruption. . The following' is the report for the New Scotia mine for the week ending ■November 20th: —During the week baling operations have been carried ori continuously from the north winze in No. 3 level, which is now unwatered to a depth of 48 The total depth of this winze is 50ft. At' a depth of SSft an old drive has been opened out from the v.-inzs from its south end, and been driven 10 or 12 reet into the footwall. This -drive is being cleaned 'out to ascertain if it reached the reef. South Westland Items. It is' reported that the Okarito bar is now workable, a straight, deep channel giving access to the harbour. Eeeent improvements to the Main South road have put it in good order for the .tourist traffic. The W ostland County Council has offered the Public 'Works Department, which controls the road, sufficient concrete pipes to culvert seven open crossings on the Mikonui-Ferguson's road. A tentative agreement has been arrived at between the Westland County Council, the Commissioner of Crown Lands, and-the settlers in tlie Wataroa district with regard to a new road •giving- access to the lower • AVataroa Gorge. The Weather.
Beautiful weather at_ the week-end caused a great exodus to Punakaiki, Seven Mile, and other picnic resorts, and a very large crowd spent Sunday at the. Marist Football Club's first annual picnic at Cameron's. Eeefton experienced a violent thunderstorm one day last week, the lightning \being of a terrifying nature. A flash struck a.wooden fence at the racecourse, smashing the rails to matchWood and hurling' pieces of timber fifty yards. . ..
Cycling. The annual meeting of. the Eeefton Cvcling Club saw a very large attendance of members,. Mr S. Duffy _ being voted to the chair. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mr E. Lochore.: secretary-treasurer, Mr G. Hubbard; club captain, Mr D. Wright; handicappers, Messrs Hubbard and Hocking; General Committee, Messrs H. Coxall, Duffy, and other officers. , It was . decided to hold a. road' race from Eeefton to 'Brazils and back, - a distance of about 10 miles, on Saturday next, .to start from Osbourne's •corner. •. Messrs E.; Lochore and G. G. Lockington wore appointed starter and timekeeper respectively: " Mr, Hubbard' announced that he would present a substantial gold medal to the competitor scoring the highest aeeiezate of points' during the season in 10 races. It was decided, to hold a club run. to • Larry's Creek on Sunday afternoon. Personal. Messrs J. O'Brien, M.P., J. A. Murdoch, and J. Jarman returned to the Coast by Saturday's express. Mr E. W. Wade, secretary of the Christchurch Bowling Centre, is visiting the W</st Coast. Passengers for Christchurch' by Saturday's express included Mr H. E. Holland, M.P., Mr and Mrs H. A. Wild, Brother Columbanus, and Messrs W. J. Butler and J. frowler. Messrs S. Tyson, A. McCarthy, and J. P. Irvine returned to the Coast yesterday. • Mrs Haub, of Waiuta, is makmg_ a good recovery from a recent operation at the Eeefton Hospital. Mr j. McNicol received injuries while working in the Blackball mine, and will be incapacitated for some weeks.
Obituary. \ ' The death is reported at Eunanga of Mrs James Haldane, of Seven Mile road. The deceased, who was ' from Scotland, loaves a husband and young family. The funeral took place this afternoon at Karoro, a . special train conveying the friends of the deceased from Eunanga. - - Shooting Accident. ' Wm. Fifefield .was accidentally shot "by. his mate while out shooting to-day 'at' Blackball, and is; reported to; -be' in 'si precarious condition. The injured man is about 24 - years of age, and is married. He recently arrived in Blackball from Scotland. The. sufferer was 'conveyed to the Grey River Hospital this afternoon. Cricket. Several matches were played to-day, the . West Coast Association opening its competitions. Star seniors, a new team, beat United B by 184 runs to 110. Mcintosh- 78, Goodall not out 26, Davey 21 Cooper 17, and Nelson 11 were the best batsmen for the winners, while Walter 26, Parkyn 23; and Malone 20 did best for United. Malone, Kettle, and Jifmieson.were the, best bowlers for United, and Cooper, Davey, and Mullins for Star. Brunner juniors defeated the recentlyformed Greymouth team by 59 runs to 57.

Mrs Duncan Ross, who is leaving Westport at the end of the month' on her - return to Bemuer.a, was entertained at the residence of Mr and Mrs C. N. Watson on Friday night, and presented with a magnificent of choice roses.,and a. very beautiful china pattern Boyal-Doulton fruit bowl. There were about : twenty guests present. Mr Watson ma'de the presentation, and in a eulogistic speech, said how sorry they all "were that Mrs Boss was leaving Westport. • Her two children also would- "be missed from the school. "Fo!r She's a Jolty Good Fellow'' was then sung, followed by three hearty cheers from the men,folk. Mrs Ross returned thanks, and said that she hoped to return some'' day, and make her permanent residence there. A noyel entertainment during the evening was afforded-by the ,erection in the entrance hall: of a spiderweb, formed-by ; the- interweaving of jazz paper streamers, the ends of which were taken bv the guests and unwound to their, starting point, where there was a gift in store for eyery-

body. A guessing competition' was won by Miss TJ. Harkness. Dancing ■was greatly enjoyed until a late hour. The projected coal output for the week will amount to ten thousand tons. The fiftieth anniversary of the first arrivals in Karamea will "be celebrated on Thursday by the holding of a monster picnic on'the War Memorial Park, followed by. a social evening in Cressey's Hall. ; The only surviving pioneer is Mr Elijah Merchant, living at Aropito. ; Mr R. P. Hudson, M.P. for Motueka, the Hon. "W. H. Mclntyre (Buller), and the Bishop of Nelson will attend. Splendid weather prevailed for the Technical High School athletic sports on Saturday. There was a large and enthusiastic gathering of spectators, and keen enthusiasm was displayed. A sprint race between the Board of Managers , and the teaching staff ended in the Mayor (Mr Menzies) coming first, Miss Bruce second, and Mr "Brockett (Principal) third.
