TARANAKI OIL PROSPECTS. The "Manawatu Daily 'Times" has the following:—From a. private source we learn that for three good' reasons our Taranaki friends maintain quiet confidence in the success of the present oil-boring operations. There is a much greater amount of money at the back of it, "?ne operators are ihorotaghlyr experienced men with .the latest appliances,'' and some of the directors at JSJet have brought home the lessons of past failures' when success seemed certain. The company is etated to have paid Customs duties amounting to £4OOO on its first importation of appliances and material. Royal-ties-,upon the crude oil are in most cases fixed for a term of five years, and already there is some quiet speculation going on writ' these options. Expert analysis shows that the oil is specially rich in the most valuable-products of • benzine, motor spirit, and bonzolono,- hut, unlike the California!! .product, does not give any s'>n .of bitumen irom the residue. This-is unfortunate for our roads, but as crude, oil of the lowest grade may "be used for -the purpose after the spirit' is distilled from it our'roads inay yet he constructed much more, cheaply.
