TRAP ACCIDENT.
OLD LADY KILLED
In a trap accident that occurred near the Bower Bridge, New Brighton, yesterday afternoon, an old lady, Mrs Martha Johnston, received fatal injuries, while her daughter Mrs Ida Hewitt, and a grandchild both fractured their right arms.' Mr William Hewitt, his wife and four children, and his mother-in-law, all of whom resided at Hoori Hay road, Cashmere, were driving in a trap down Wainoni - road, whon at the approach to the bridge, the horse took fright 3t tho water and stumbled. The shafts and part of the- harness gavo way, and Mr Hewitt jumped down to take hold of the horse's head. ' Before lie could do so, the animal turned round and bolted back up the road. In twenty yards ho freed himself from the trap, which stopped abruptly, throwing the occupants oil to the road. _ Dr. 'Glasgow attended to the injured people, and they were brought into the Christchurch Hospital. Mrs Johnston, who was 79 years of age, was admitted at . 3.30 p.m. suffering rom jniuries to the head and ribs, and she died at 6 o'clock. Mrs Hewitt ™^?. recl a broken wrist, and her son, llaam Hewitt, aged 7 years, broke nis right arm. Mother and son were treated in the outpatients' department a * th « Hospital and discharged.
