GRAND THEATRE. "ONE EXCITING , NIGHT." X PICTURE OF SENSATIONS. ' D. W. Griffith's picture of a hundred Bensations, "One Exciting Night," is the premier' attraction this week at the Grand Theatre, and the huge queue which lined up outside the building early; on Saturday evening showed that its season in .this city ia assured of success. For once Griffith, who has made his great reputation as a producer of spectacular scenes, has followed up another track,, and given the movie world a picture which, dispensing with huge enaembles, yet is so undoubtedly compelling that he has even mora reason to be proud of it than some of his bigger efforts. For two hours "One Exciting Night" keeps an attendance ,in a tense state for the unexpected thing is constantly happening. It must not be imagined, however, that the picture is merely a succession of unconnected thrills, such being far from being the case. As a matter of fact, the story of "One Exciting Night" is a really interesting one, and even \vithout the numerous thrills which embellish it would be in itself sufficient to hold >■ one's attention. There is a murder mystery for one thing, and a comicbl darkie, "Romeo,". whose whimsical doings provide no end of amusement., In America a producer has to be careful how he handles a coloured person In .a picture, owing to the racial question, which is. always uppermost in that country, but Griffith has used "Romeo" : with such masterly effect that he has managod to give complete satisftwtfion, at' the same time offending no one's susceptibilities. The big scene 'ot the picture, is that depicting the.stolen, which if is safe to. say is presented' as no one but Griffith could do it. In it is seen a terrific thunderstorm, the lightning flashing in a terrifying manner and the .rain coming down iri'a hear? downpour. ,Houses . are demolished, and the whole effect suggests the end of" all things. In such a background the mystery is cleared up, and a lore story'comes to o .happy conclusion. : The role of the ' heroine is taken -by Carol Dempster, and the supporting cast is worthy of a picture of such a class. In order to enhance the effect of the 'picture a special musical score has been written, • and-"under Hiss Agnes Shearsby the orchestra plays it satisfactorily. , , .. Two of the most popular artists- aliva" are featured in"'"Caught', in the Cabaret," a new issue of a favourite comedy. They are the one and 6nly Charlie Chaplin arid the charming Mabel Normand. ; The: world's greatest comedian js seen ,in a fourth-rate cabaret aa a waiter, such a waiter it must be admitted wlio could' never earn his living outside the movies. It is one of Charlie's most ; comical parts, and to ask anyone, to witness his. ridiculous carrying on without laughing heartily would be to ask the impossible. The programme will, be repeated throughout the week.-
