YACHTING.
■ CANTERBURY CLUB. A fresh north-east wind, choppy sea, and an obb tide were the favourable conditions under which members of the Canterbury Yacht and Power-Boat Club hold their races on Saturday afternoon, in the outer harbour. AU craft carried full sail with one exception. It was disappointing that there were insufficient entries in the first class event for a race, but it appears that the Kia Ora has not started racing this season. The owner of the Annis, Mr R. Miller, was absent in Wellington on Saturday, and the club rule being that there must be three starters, the race had to be abandoned. In the second class event, seven yachts staVted: —Phyllis, G. Whitford (scr); Waterbettle, D. M. Scott (lmin); Linnet, R. Sinclair (lmin); Pioioi, R. Tredennick (lmin); Sherub, B.' Scarvell (smin); Shadow, G. Henderson (smin); Reverie, Sladstone (7roin). All crossed the line close together, Wat,erbeet]e leading, Linnet following, with Phyllis, Pioioi, Sherub, Reverie, and Shadiw being close up. After a short run, with a free sheet to the pile light they rounded in the following order: Waterbeetle, Phyllis, Linnet, Pioioi, Sherub, Shadow, and Reverie. All the yachts ■ stood on the port tack for a short distance, then came on to the starboard tack to the Gladstone Pier. At this stage the Phyllis took the lead, and maintained it throughout, the remainder of the race. Pioioi broke the craw-ring on the boom, and had to be hove-to for three minutes while repairs were effected. Sevffral short boards wero made off the north shore before they made across to the Ripa Island buoy, which was rounded in the following order: —Phyllis, Waterbeetle, Linnet,- Shadow, Sherub, Reverie, and Pioioi. Spinnakers were set on all yachts for the run down the harbour to the pile light, with the exception of the Reverie. ' The times at the pile light were: —Phyllis, 3hr slmin 15sec;' Waterbeetle, 3hr 52min 15see; Lin,nctt. 3hr 52min 50sec: Shadow, 3hr 56min JOsec; Sherub, iihr sGmin 50sec; Reverie, 4hr 4min 40sec; Piojoi, 4hr 4inin ' 40sec. In rounding the pile light the Reverie broke her port mainstay and retired- from the race. Pioioi stood down the harbour for a short distance, arid then deemed, it advisable to retire. The remainder of the yachts followed the same tactics as in tho first round. The boats finished in the following order:; — Phyllis, (scr), 4hr 34min .. 1
Waterbeetle (lmin), 4hr 38min 47sec .. 2 Linnet (lmin), 4hr 38min 52sec .. 3
In the boys' "sailing dinghy race, five boats .started: Kowhai (scr), S. Sinclair; Alert (scr), B. Jeffries; Isabel (scr),-R. Waddell; Raffles (3min), G. Brassel; Tiki (6min), T. Norris. The race was held on the inner harbour, from a mark between tho end of the ferry boat and the end of the Gladstone Pier, round the dredge buoy, and thence around the buoy off No. 1 breastwork, and back to the standing mark, twice round. Kowhai. with -her new sail, soon took up the lead, which she maintained throughout the rce. The Kowhai and Raffles were excellently handled by their owners, and Alert put up a better, showing towards the end of the rßc'e. but Isabel and Tiki were indifferently handled. In the first round the competitors passed , the starting marl; in the following order:—Kowhai, 3hr 59min; Raffles, 4hr Omih 55sec; Alert, 4hr lmin 45sec; Isabel, 4hr 3min 20sec; Tiki, 4hr Bmin 50sec. The boats kept up the same order, in'the Becond round until near the finish, when Alert sailed into second place. - The boats finished as follows: — Kowhai ' (scr),' 4hr 20min 45sec ' .. 1 Raffles (2min), 4hr 24min 50sec .! 2 Alert (scr), 4hr 23min 20sec .. 3
