An arrival in the stream at "Wellington on Thursday was the Union Company's new eteainer Kairanga from Hull, via Cape Town, and Devonport and Launceston (Tasmania). The vessol later berthed at the Thorndon Wharf. She sailed from Hull on September Ist, and had an uneventful trip. A call was made at Cape Town for twelve hours, and chaff, amounting to about 800 tons, was loaded at tho two Tasmanian ports.- Half of this is for Wellington and the remainder for Auckland. The weather on the trip was, cold nearly all_the way, and a strong southerly gale waa encountered near Wellington, delaying the arri«sl of the vessel considerably. The Kairanga was built at Hefißle, near Hull, for a French firm, and was named the St. ±lominiquo. She waa intended for the French wine trade, but the Union Company acquired her before sho commenced trading. A striking feature of tho Kairanga is her general spaciousness, the accommodation for the men being big, while the holds are also very commodious. The vessel has unusual-looking doublo 6©ts of masts, but it is understood that these will not be used, B3 they will not be suitable for working the cargoes the Kairanga will be carrying. The wngines are triple expansion, capable of burning cither coal or oil. She made the trip out from Hull under coal, and her average speed was about eight knots. Her gross tonnage is 2830, and shn has a length of 824 ft. a breadth of 44ft, and a depth of 24ft 6in. Captain W. D. Cameron brought "the Kairanga out, and he had with him" tho following officers: —Chief. Mr J. Han: second, Mr J. J. Barnard; third, Mr G-. McFarlane: chief engineer, Mr McLellan; second, Mr Wilson: third, Mr Smart; wireless operator. Mr Lloyd-Jones; chief .steward. Mr Wadilee. Tho Kairanga left Wellington at midnight on Friday for Pic ton and Auckland, whero she will complete discharge. It is understood that she will later be employed in tho coal trade. PORT OF TIMARU.
