A nfty-milo read race, from Ashburton to Christchurch, was held On Saturday, undor the auspices of the Canterburv branch of iho Jv.Z.A.A.A. and the Christchurch Amateur Cycling Club. Although the weather was fine, tlu conditions were far from ideal, for the riders had to ride practically tho v.'holo distance in tho teeth oi a strong north-easterly wind. The condition of tha roads was not good, and hot sun and tho clouds of dust added nothing to the pleasure of the trip. , , , . Entering tho straight. Hill, who had headed the bunch, drew away, closely attended by Hewson, who arew away "to win from Hill by two lengths. Tish was a close third. Tho nest few men arrived singlv, until a bunch of about halt a tlozen entered the ring,- headed bv Forrester. The latter, who secured fastest lime finished more strongly than any of tho otl'nrs. A. M. K. Nairn (Dunedin), first competitor from Otago' to finish.The preliminary events proved interesting, not the least attractive performance of the day being the exhibition o£. hammer throwing by P. McHokn, champion of Australia and New Zealand. His best throw was 144 ft, only 3ft under his own record. Tho other events resulted as follows:—'

Half-mile Handicap—F. AY. Large (21yds) nnd 0. C. Harloy (63yds) dead-heat 1, J. R. Crawshaw (34yds) 3. A splendid race. Harloy was. limit man, and he held the lead from the start. The first quarter was slow and enabled Large, virtual scratch man, to get up. Over the last 300 yards-, Ilarley and Large raced for it, and in a great finish they breasted the tapa together. McCully presided, and in ■presenting' the successful ridera with. their trophies, he 6tated "that, although the club vras a very young one, tho number cf amateur competitors had increased considerably during tho last few months. Ho congratulated the ivinners upon their success and' also all tho 43 riders, ■vvlvo finished under adverse conditions.
