RING OF RADIUM.
TREATMENT FOR CANCER. AN AMERICAN EXPERIMENT. (ST cable- rnsss association—cofieight) (nEUTKr.'s telegkams.) (Received November 21st, 11.3-5 p.m.) NEW YORK, November 20. At a Philadelphia hospital four glass tubes of a sixteenth of nil inch diameter, containing emanations of secondary ray radium, were placed in the centre of a cancerous growth iu the stomach of a woihan patient, by Dr. D. 13. James, and a ring of them placed around the cancer to protect adjacent organs. Dr. James rave that in 21 days the tubes will emanate curative influences. Ho bases his confidence in the experiment on the success of similar treatment of surfaco cancers. ONE DAY STRIKE. COLD-STORAGE WORKERS. (BY CiBLE—PRESS ASBOCIATIOX—COrnHGDT) (heuter's telegrams.) LONDON, November 20. A lightning strike occurred this morning at the London Doclr eold--Bto rage warehouse, and spread l rapidly, and all riverside cold-storage workers are idle. An official of the Union Cold Storago Company, Ltd., said tho trouble was due to some men objecting to the employers' right to employ whom they pleased. Certain workers thought they had a prior claim to those engaged. No employer could tolerate this. Vital principles were at stake.
Alter a meeting of the storage section of the Transport Union, Mr Thompson, the docks group secretary, said that the strike was due to tho refusal to employ one of the most active members of the Transport Union, which the men regarded as victimisation. The men Would remain out until a satisfactory settlement was reached. Meanwhile the matter, would: be submitted to tho executive of tho Transport Union.
The strike has not yet appreciably affected Smithfield, hut as all the Union Cold Storage Company men are out, thoso relying on tlio company will he without supplies immediately tho Smithfield and other London markets' meat supplies are exhausted.
Covent Garden is affected inasmuch as some of the foreign fruit is held by this company. The strike is unofficial, and the Transport Union is enquiring into the matter.. , WORK TO RESUME. (HEUTER'S TELtaiUUS.) (Received November 21st, 8.30 p.m.) LONDON. November 20. ..The cold storage strike has been settled, and work will resume at midu'Rht. .
