Miss Dorothy Spiller, who has been engaged as the soloist for the Male Voice Choir's concert at Greymouth, leaves for the West Coast this morning, accompanied by her mother. Mr and Mrs F. Allison and Mrs E. Scott, who have been visiting Christchurch, return to Geraldine to-day. Miss E., M. Cole, youngest daughter of the late Thomas Cole, of Dunedin, was married in Vancouver, British Columbia, this week to Dr. Eoss Mulholland (Vancouver).
The engagement is announced of Edna, only daughter of Mr and Mrs A. Peverill, of Avonside, to Howard, only son of Mr and Mrs A. J. Hoskins, of "Waimate.
The final meeting of the collectors for the Spreydon branch of the British and Foreign Bible Society -was held at the home of Mrs Yoss, the president, where a pleasant afternoon was spent. It was reported that £.30 5s had been collected this year, and this is a slight improvement of the result obtained from last year's campaign.
Madame Menere, the Furrie*, has now taken possession of .the shop at 129 Cashel street, opposite Beaths', formerly occupied by Madame Jane, Xitd. It is just next door to her old premises. Madame Menere will for the next few weeks be able to undertake a' limited amount of re-modelling work. M 6631

The last of a series of play-reading entertainments, which have been given ; fortnightly by Mrs J. Gore-Newell will j be held on Tuesday evening, -when John Maseneld's work, "Melloney Holtspur," will be read by Mrs Newell. Much interest is being taken in a "Henley on Avon" regatta and carnival to be held early in February. The carnival, of which Captain and the Hon. Mrs Tahu Rhodes are patrons, will be formally opened by his Worship the Mayor (Mr J. A. Fleshcr) and Mrs Flesh er. A garden party and sale of work will be held at the Methodist Children's' Home at Papanui this afternoon. Amongst the various stalls will be an afternoon tea tent, fruit salad and ice cream stalls. The Mayor will open the fete at 2.30 p.m. Arrangements are well in hand for the carnival dance at the Rendezvous Cabaret this evening. Bailey's Jazz Band will supply the dance music. Supper tables, may be reserved by telephone during the day. Arrangements for the "Woolston Band fete, to be held in AVoolston Park on November 29th, are well in hand, and Matron Bagley. of St. Helens Hospital, and Matron Pike, of Essex Home, have kindly consented to judge the baby show on that date. At yesterday's meeting of tlie Canterbury Education Board it was resolved to send letters of appreciation to Mrs C. A. Kerr, sole teacher, Ashley Gorge, who lias resigned after 34 years' service, «.nd to Miss G. Laurence, infant mistress, St. Albans, who lias resigned after 42 years' service. There was n. good attendance at the Home Economic Association meeting hist evening when Mr J. Hassel. gave a practical demonstration of "Home Carpentry." Mr H-.'ssel detailed tlie care and use of tools, sawing, planing, etc., and gave several practical examples of the machining of cabinets, shelves and Ottomans. ' A hearty vote of thanks to Mr Hassel closed the evening.
The final meeting of the Training College Bachelors' Club took tho form of a social evening at the home of the president, Mr D. W. Anderson (Office road, Merivale). One of the most pleasant evenings in the. records of the club was spent in general discussion of the year's activities, interspersed with musical and elocutionary selections. Some of those who assisted in contributing to the evening's enjoyment were:—Messrs D. W. Anderson, B. Bobbins, A. J. Huston, V. B. Foxon, A. Collins, H. E. Hawthorne, A. E. Nicholson (treasurer), S. G. Lamport, E. K. Loney, C. L. Martin, and A. E. Chambers (secretary). On Monday afternoon Mrs Flesher, president of the city branch, British and Foreign Bible Society, entertained the lady collectors at aftefnoon tea in the reception-room, City Council Chambers. Miss Cooper, organising secretary, gave a very interesting address on the work of the Society, and thanked Mrs Flesher for the very pleasant afternoon enjoyed by all. The amount collected up to date is £llO 19s lOd, and the November returns are still to come. Amongst those present were: —Mesdames Sowden (vice-president), Burns, Billens, Taylor, Smith, Jones, Misses Parkerson, Cooper, Preston, Huston, Gaudin, Evans, Musgrove, Daly, Butt, Elsom, and Barry (hon. secretary). The following ladies were present at tho official dinner given to delegate's by the committee of the third Australian and New Zealand Philatelic Congress:—Mesdames A. L. Chappell, P. E. Jackson, A. Yesterday tafternoon Buckner f a Dixie Jubilee Singers paid a visit to the Christchurch Public Hospital and Military Sanatorium, Cashmere Hills, and entertained. the patients with songs, glees, and quartets, the various numbers being greatly appreciated. Those who contributed were Miss Helen Smallwood, Madame Neal, G. Buckner, and Messrs W. Gauze, 0. C. A. Como, Marcus D'Albert, W. C. Buckner, and L. Morris. At the Sanatorium, afternoon tea was provided by the matron, Miss McLeod. A visit was also paid to the Children's Fresh Air Home, Cashmere Hills. The motor-cars in which the party, -travelled were kindly supplied by Sir Geo. Clifford and Mr K. Nicholson.
