NEW BRIGHTON NOTES.

Tides. It will be high tide on the beach today at 11.40 a.m. and in the river at 1.10 p.m., and to-morrow at 12.4 p.m. and 1.34 p.m. respectively. Social and Dance. The annual social of the New Brighton Football Club was held in the Pier Hall on Thursday evening. There was a large attendance, including a number of visitors from the city. The hall was tastefully decorated in the club colours, evergreens, and flowers. Music was supplied by Beid's orchestra. The card tourney was held in the dining hall, under the management of Mr McKenzie. The successful competitors were: Ladies, Mrs Seaward 1, Mrs Kershaw 2, and Mrs Diehl 3; gentlemen, Mr Frost 1, Mr Samson 2, Mr Butterworth 3. The general success of the function was due to the club secretary, Mr Boss Smith.

War Memorial. The Mayor (Mr J. Gamble) has decided to ask the Memorial Committee to meet him next week in order to consider the best means of giving effect to the resolution passed at the public meeting held on November 4th.

Sports Association. At a meeting of the committee of the New Brighton Sports Association it was decided to invite the residents of Sumner to a social evening in Joyland, when the inter-borough shield will be presented.

Senior Cadet Company. At the weekly parade of the New Brighton Senior Cadets, Lieut. Allen, N.Z.S.C., staff officer in charge of the area, topk advantage of the occasion heartily to congratulate the Company upon being placed fifth for the whole of New Zealand in the shooting for the Imperial Challenge Shield. Before concluding the parade the officer commanding selected a team to shoot in the "Weekly Press" Challenge Shield Competition. 1 W.C.T.TT.

There was a good attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the New Brighton branch of the W.C.T.U., held on Thursday. The need for enlarging the membership roll was stressed in a letter from Mrs T. E. Taylor. Letters of thanks were received from the Plunket Society for donations, and from Mrs B. Day for helpers at the recent A. and P. Show. Beports of the New Zealand Alliance Convention were given by the delegates, Mesdames Good and Patten. It was decided to present the prizes for the school temperance essays at a social next month. A donation of 10s was made to the school fire and drum band. Letters dealing with the Prohibition question in America were read from Mrs Don and Miss Henderson. s

Methodist Church. Services 'will be conducted to-morrow as follows: —11, Eev. F. T. Bead; 6.30, Bev. 8. Lawry; North Brighton School, 6.30, Key. F. T. Eead. Fair and Christmas Tree.{ In aid of the Anglican Church Fund, a two days' Dutch fair and Christmas tree was officially opened by Mr G. D. Sullivan, MJ?., yesterday, in the presence of a large assemblage. The vicar, the Eev. C. Maclaverty, presided. At the conclusion oflthe opening address, Jean Eondell presented Mrs Sullivan with a bouquet. There were all manner of stalls, including produce, sweets, needlework, books, baskets, flowers, variety, a huge Christmas tree, and quite a number of other attractions, including competitions in cooking, photography, and buttonhole making. A capital orchestra discoursed pleasing music. South Brighton Gala. A well-attended meeting of the South Brighton Gala Committee was held on Thursday, Mr E. Campbell presiding. The secretary reported that arrangements were in hand for the" lighting of the Domain; also that permission had been obtained from the Minister of Internal Affairs to hold an art union, which would constitute the main effort in connexion with the gala. Mr J. Jowett's offer to take up a collection at the Domain gates was accepted with thanks. The following sub-committees were appointed: —Advertising: Messrs Barnes, Jowett, and the secretary; sports: Messrs Mcllroy and Flood; stallholders: tea tent; Mrs McFadden; j produce and variety: Mrs "Weavers, i weight-guessing: Mr J. McFadden; box ball: Mr D. M. Hill; chocolate board, Mr A. Hulme; bran tub : Mr W. Hulmc. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr A. Hulme for his services to the committee on Show Day in connexion with the box ball.
