CLARENCE BRIDGE
READY BY MAY NEXT. Motorists and others interested in road connexion between Canterbury and -Marlborough hav© become somewhat tired of the announcement that "the cunt at the Clarence river is again oufe of action": it has become almost as classic as the railway ganger's reports regarding derailments— "Off agm. on agin, off agin ; Finnegan." "I think that it is very that the Clarence bridge will be opened in May," was a remark made oy Sir J. D. Bruce, representative of the South Island counties on the Main Highways Board to a representative of "The Press" vesterday, and the announcement will be received with considerable gratification by motorists and others. _. _
In introducing th© subject Mr Bruce said that as the Clarence bridge is now under the charge of the Main Highways Board ho had been able to get soiiio information regarding the progress being made with its reinstatement. As the result of the big flood of May. 1923, four sets of cylinders had to be replaced; of those three aro either down or well on the way, leaving one 6et to be nut down. The timber is nearly all cut and ready for fitting when the cylinders «ro in position. "It is almost certain," added Mr Bruoo, "that the bridge will be open in May." The reporter asked if this statement was lively to realised. "I went ncdit into the question on this occasion," replied Mr Bruce, "and I think that it is very definite that it will be opened in May."
