LOCAL AND GENERAL. Attempted Murder. At the Supreme Court yesterday John Edward Jefferys was found guilty on a charge of having attempted to murder his wife by pushing her over a cliff at Glentui on July 27th. Page 14. Main Highways Board. Model specifications of different methods of road construction have been agreed upon by the Main Highways Board, and are practically ready to be issued. Page 4. The Clarence Bridge. It is fully anticipated that the Clarence bridge, which was partly destroyed by the floods of May, 1923. will"be reopened for traffic in May next year. Motoring Pages. Motoring items will be found on pages 4, 5, and 6. BRITISH AND FOREIGN. H.C.L. The British Government is setting Dp a Eoyal Commission to investigate the cost of foodstuffs, with instructions to report, first on bread and meat. It is stated that the Government haa before it a scheme for regulating the flow of meat to the market. Cairo Sensation. Major-Gencral Sir Lee Stack, head of the British forces in Egypt and the Soudan, was shot and severely wounded while motoring in a Cairo street. His assailants escaped. Irish Free State. The first two of the 14 by-elections in the Irish Free State have gone to Eepublicans, which is considered a severe blow at. the Government. Empire Chats. The meeting of the British Prime Minister with Dominion High Commissioners is to be mado a permanent feature. In future tho Foreign and Colonial Secretaries will also attend what are described as "informal cliats over tho teacups. " Airships. Britain Las set ont to establish what will be the world's greatest airship service. Geneva Protocol. It is pointed out that in desiring postponement of the discussion of the Protocol, Britian merely desires time to consult the Dominions. Her request does not mean scrapping the Protocol. Items. Cardinal Logue, Boman Catholic Primate of all Ireland, is dead. The National Liberal Club has set out to raise a fighting fund of £500,000. The death is reported of Thomas Ince, the film producer. The All Blacks will return through Canada.
