SERVING OF WRITS.
BOROUGH COUNCIL'S GRIEVANCE. (SPECIAL TO "THK PBIS8.") MASTERTON,'November 1 20. The recent Supreme. Court action in which the Masterton Borough Councillors were fined was mentioned in the Council to-night by the Mayor, who said the Crown Law Office had adopted a peculiar attitude in respect of the fines and costs. These, amounting to £BS 55,; had been, paid into the Borough funds (according to law). Advice had now been received from tlie Crown Office, that the amount of costs, £25 sa, had : to be paid over to the solicitors in Masterton who had represented the. Crown. He moved that the account be passed for payment. - i Cr. Evans: It leaves a bitter taste in-, the mouth, .but I will second that. Cr. Kemp said the Council's action 1 , of protest had not been in vain. Local bodies'all over the country had written to the Government protesting against the severity of the penalty. The Mayor said Cr. Jordan, who had. appeared for the Council, had accepted service of all writs on behalf of the Council, with the intention' of saving the serving of 12 separate writs at £1 Is each, yet the Crown Law Office was -demanding payment for the lot. He thought it most unfair. The account was passed.
