HOT-WATER SERVICE.

ft INTERESTING EXPERIMENT. An interesting scheme is in operation at some of the Yorkshire colliery villages occupied by the employees of the Staveley Coal and Iron Company, whereby hot water is laid on to the houses. The scheme, which was originated by Mr C. P. Markham, the. chairman of the company, has been in the experimental stage for some time, but is ;now complete and working satisfactorily. A continuous supply, at a temperature ranging from 180 to 200deg. r., is provided by means of exhaust steam from the collieries situated from 400 yds ,to 800 yds from the villages. The steam is passed through heaters composed of a series of brass tubes through which the water is forced by centrifugal pumps. When the water leaves tho heater, it is circulated through the houses in copper tubing of suitable dimensions. The water used is '' town," or • drinking water, so that, if a beverage is required, a kettle can be filled from the tap and in a few seconds brought up to boiling point on the fire. The villages where the scheme has now been completed are: Harteington (50 houses), Speedwell (275 houses), Woodcourt (10ft houses), and Netherthorpe (112 houses). A development of the scheme, on a different principle, is now being installed at Poolsbrook, where it "■ will be applied to 398 houses. In this case, the steam will be generated from the,.refuse..from,, tho. houses.
