A recent meeting of the Canterbury branch of the Engineers', Firemen's and Cleaners' Association passed the following resolution: "That this branch, at the present juncture, is firmly opposed to the reintroduction of New Zealand coal on tho locomotives of the railways, owing to the serious trouble in the past when, this coal was used. That nntil such time as a direct representative of the E.F.C.A. is convinced, and it is demonstrated to him, that any particular seam of New Zealand coal is suitable for all-round locomotive work, and then a guarantee given that 6ueu coal only will be used, we protest against the uee of New Zealand coal. We firm* ly oppose, at all times, the use of any New Zealand coal of a lignite nature, owing to its Joor steaming qualities, the danger of sotting ediintry in the vicinity of railway liaee on fire in dry seasons, and it also involving too much attention by the fireman and tho driver, to a certain extent, being drawn away from signals and the running of his
