CARNIVAL WEEK.
DECREASED TRAMWAY TRAFFIC. Fewer passengers were carried on the trwhw'ayia during l Carnival Week this year to the races, trotting meeting, and show. A report submitted by the Works and Traffic Committee of the Tramway Board at yesterday's meeting of the Board stated that the decrease in passengers, as compared with Carnival Week last year, was 7836, and the decrease in revenue £297: the revenue on other lines Bhowed an increase, of £63. Work of Staff. The committee wish to record its appreciation of the work of engineering and office staff, with particular reference to tho work of the traffic supervisor, inspectors, motormon and conductors. There was no power interruption, and only one small car trouble at the end of the week. On An ordinary day tho number of passengers carried is. 52,096. The average per day over Carnival Week reaches 81,931, or an increase of o7 per cent., while on Show Day the number jumps up to 140,206. or V&t) £er cent, increase over an ordinary ty's work. So much extra work being done by the Traffic Department without accident, and with a greatly increased motor and other road traffic to contend with, indicates a degree of devotion to duty and dl-round efficiency which is very commendable. The committee also notes with gratitude the assistance rendered by members of the police'force. The chairman (Mr H. Pearce) said he took it that members concurred with the committee's expression of its appreciation of tho staff's services. The strong competition from motor 'buses would have to be considered. The report was adopted without comment. . At a later stage of the meeting a letter was read from the Canterbury A. and P. Association thanking the Board for reducing the- special fares to the Addington Show Grounds on the nightiof the 13th and trusting that the arrangement had been satisfactory to the Board as well <vs the AssociaThe general manager (Mr Frank Thompson) said that they had carried more to the Show Grounds on Thursday night this year as compared with last year, but the revenue to the Board had been no greater. The letter was received.
