RURAL MAIL DELIVERY.
OHOKA INTERESTED. Early this week Mr J. E. Broadfoot, Chief Postmaster, Christchurch, was in Ohoka investigating the possibilities of the rural delivery scheme for the district. A route had been mapped out by the committee covering practically every house in the combined districts of Clarkville, Ohapuku, Ohoka, M'andeville, Flaxton, and Waverley. Signatures were obtained from residents guaranteeing an annual income of £9O, and a map showing the position of each resident was sent to the Chief Postmaster. During his tour of- inspection it< was found that by a slight alteration of the route Eyreton could be joined on to the scheme, giving another twenty subscribers. Several doubtful residents also signed up, making a total of 120. The revised route totals 45 miles, and as there are at least 20 households on the outlying parts of the route whose residences will be passed by the service, it only requires a proportion of them to sign up to give the three per mile required by the Department. Mr Broadfoot expressed the opinion that if the small number of residents in the township of Ohoka, amounting to about twenty, desired a post office to be retained for their benefit, doubtless the Postmaster-General would agree to its retention on a modified scale in connexion with the telephone _ office which it has never been proposed to close. Judging by the satisfactory response to the scheme, it is more than probable that the rural mail delivery will be established within a few months.
