AUCTIONS. H. MATSON AND CO. tt MATSON AND CO.'S REPORT. L. FAT CATTLE. From our estimate of tho market we made an entry of 570 head, of which H. Matson and Co."'s entry represented 150 head. The market opened at prices » shade below the previous week, as, with the largo entry and with the unfavourable climatic conditions, people ecemed to be npathetic at the opening Tjortion ,of the sale, but early in the sale the prices hardened to a basis equivalent in out opinion to the previous week for prime quality beef. In evidence of this wo can point to three or four standard lines of cattle" from Banks Peninsula that fully maintained the best of recent values, insosiuch that steer beef eold at anywhere from 436 to -17s 6d per lOOib. This was noticeable in connexion with beef weighing 700 to SOOlb. Big. heavy, aged cattle Gold from '2s to ia a 1001b cheaper on a per 1001b basis, realising from 38e to 425. There were numerous pens of steers in the market from COO to 7001b that were selling at the eame figure from 43s to 455, and in odd casts higher, and generally we are of the opinion that that was the basi3 of prices that prime steer beef was realising. Throughout the sale graziers were keeping constant record of the different lots, and yet very few were bought by graziers. Prime and best weights, both as regards cow and heifer beef, were realising prices quiteequal to the primest of the steer beef, and in many cases exceeded it for light-weights. Light-wcight3 seemed to have no limit on a per 1001b basis when they were butter fat nnd attractive-looking. The sale was concluded at 3.30 p.m., and considering the number of single beasts that had to ee submitted owing to the multiplicity of email tradesmen who are now operating in the market, it was highly creditable to the salesmen the despatch generally with which the ;igen's put through their work under very disadvantageous circumstances. "Wtfit Coast Lccf, North Island beef, and beef generally that was travelled did not attract as much attention 33 previously. This was attributt.blo to many of the larger butchers having consignments of these grades on hand. The following is our basis of values: Heavy rjrimo beef sold from £lB 103 to £2O 10s. Modium-weight3 sold from £ls to £l7 10s. Kandv-weights sold from £l3 10s to £l4 10y. Other grades such as light, too young, or unfinished', sold from £8 IC3 to £l2 10s. Best heifers sold from £l3 10s to £ls 10s. ■Medium prime heifer 3 sold from £lO to £l2 10s. Handy-weight heifers sold from £7 10s to £9 10s. Light-weight heifers sold from £5 10s ixj £7. MAI SON ANI) CO., ADDINGTON. STORE SHEEP. To-day's sale was in our opinion a champion sale, and showed a decided advance on previous sales. Shorn wethers, ewes, and lambs -shorn, wether hoggets in tho -wool, all told particularly well. Tho buoyant news of tho prices recorded at the Wellington wool sale, together with tho climatic conditions at present existing, and the abundance of feed that is in the country, haa filled cvervbody with a desire to acquire some stock. Shorn ewes and lambs, aged ewes, sold anywhere from 26s to 283 for tho best grade. Two lots were pissed in at 30s and over. Socond grade ewes, aged, with fair lambs, eold from 23s 6d to 25s 6d. No inferior or third grades came forward. Local sheep, shorn wethers, sola from 27s Gd to 308. Second grade sold from 24s to 265. Third grade eold at 235. A lino of Chatham Islands wethers, shorn, brought 365, and a lino of shorn four and six-tooth Chatham Island ewes brought 37s 3d. Wether hoggets in the wool eold from £2 to £2 la 9d. Ewo hoggots in the wool sold up to 495. FOav BEST RESULTS CONSIGN YOUR STOCK TO H. MATSON AND CO., ADDINGTON. FAT SHEEP. There wa-j a big yarding of fat sheep, and it nearly half-past five the sale was still • proceeding. The bulk of tlie entry conijaise«l shorn sheep, and reviewing ttio mar!«ct on the whole day, we are inclined to think the prices generally were a shade easier, but at a bis sale like this it is only natural that there should be a little irregularity, and one or two occasional Bale 3 do not make a market. H. 'Matson and Co.'s entry comprised 800, and we were generally satisfied with the inurket. There was a keen demand for ewe 3 and there wa>> not a big lot forward. All flheop in the wool certainly showed a decided improvement on previous rates, and the butchera in their endeavour to get them forced xho rates on these particular sheep out of proportion with tho current rates of tho day. Export buyers, were operating throughout but got very few shcap. FOR BEST RESULTS CONSIGN YOUR ' STOCK TO H. MATSON AND CO., ADDING TON. LAMBS. There was quite a good yarding of lambs and tho quality wa3 excellent. Tho market opened at good price 3 and keen competition, and good rates wero the order of tho day, and as the sale progressed so tho prices •hardened, until towards tho closo of the sal© it becamo a battle loyal generally to acquire tho various pens. H. Matson and Co.'s entry comprised 156, and wo feci certain that the prices recorded will bo moro than satisfactory to tho vendors for, wkom we sold. FOR BEST RESULTS CONSIGN YOUR STOCK TO H. MATSON AND CO., ADDINGTON. 'calves. There wa.3 a good yarding of calves of ovory description, the entry being a littlo over 200, of which H. Matson and Co.'s entry was 122. Tho demand was satisfactory for a good period of the sale, but tho inclement weather evidontly hurried the buyers away, thus tho latter part lacked competition. Values wore:— Small calves, 12s to 225. Medium calves, 25s to 32a. • Good calves, 35s to 455. Best calves, 47a 6d to 555. Large runners, to £7 17s 6d. FOR BEST RESULTS CONSIGN YOUR STOCK TO H. MATSON AND CO., ADDINGTON. DAIRY CATTLE. , Tho total entry of the dairy cattle wa3 75, and of theso H. Matson and Co.'s entry was 45. The attendance was only a fair one, but thoro were numerous new bidders and outsido buyers in the market for anything that was attractive a3 regards size, colour, and general appearance that could warrant they wero good dairy calttle. Tho ealo opened to an uncortain and reticent audience, but hardened as tho sale progressed. We quote:— Best second, third and fourth calvors, from £8 to £9. Medium 6ccond, third end fourth calvors, from £6 lio £7. Other second, third and fourth calvors, from £i to £5 15a. Best springing hoiferß, from £7 to £B. Medium springing heifers, from £5 ito £6. Light or too young, from £3 to £4 15s. Old cows, dry cows, and cows without a warranty, •or cows with no condition, sold from £2 to £3. STORE CATTLE. H. Matson and Co.'s entry represented 85 head. Tho total entry was just an average one, and tho only attractive lino of cattle penned was a lino of Jersey heiferß, which wero rathor varied in colour. H. Matson and Co. advertised Kheso, and they wero sold at £5 7s for four being the pick, and tho balance wero sold at from £2 10s to £1 10s. The competition of tho packing houses ■was keen for all cows and bulls suitable for i export, and one cannot shut thci? eyes to Itho fact that the price of these particular I grades is showing a hardening tendency throughout. The balance of tho entry was a cosmopolitan one, showing a lack of constitution, an absoluto lack of any uniform colour, age, or standard, and with little animation in Itho bidding except in one or two instances, where an odd beaot happened to Bhow a hit of breeding. There was a good demand for young bulls, and a« most of tho bulls aro sold in tho yards without a warranty, and generally for somoiault, tho price of £6 12s for young bulls may be considered a good ono in tho open yard. FAT PIGS. Thero was a medium entry of fa* pigs forward, and all classes eold freely, although slightly easier than last sale. Values were:— Light porkers, £2 6s to £3 15s. Heavy porkers, £2 17s 6d to £3 2e 6d. Average price per lb, 7Jd to Bd. Light baconers, £3 10s to £4. Heavy baconers, £4 5s to £4 10s. Average price per lb, 6Jd to 7<L Choppers, £2 10s to £5.
