ANGLING.
WAIMAKARIRI AND ASHLEY
RIVERS.
Mr. P. 'J. Moiloy,!".chairman' of the' Waimakariri and Ashley Rivers Committee, submitted the following report at last night's meeting of\the Council of the North Canterbury 'Acclimatisation Society :
Fishing in the' "Waimakariri during the, month of October was very" good. Some nice baskets were,caught in and arbund Stewart's Gully, several bags of eight and liine fish being reported from" that locality, six pounds being the largest caught. With few exceptions all \the fish were ' reported to be in excellent condition. —-
During the month, there. were three small floods in the river; the whitebait and silyeries are. not so plentiful as in other seasons;' This may be accounted for by the', muddy state of the .river. Very few trout have, been caught so far on the minnow. ■ Most! of the fish were caught with the bully and set rod. When the river clears anglers expect •very .good sport, as, the general opinion ■is. that there* are a fair numbfer of fish in the river. One angler reports that lie caught a few small rainbow trout below' the Empire bridge. The trout seem to be mostly below the bridge, very few being taken higher up stream. Fishing in the Ashley Biver has been very poor, and anglers from this river . stftte there is a great scarcity of trout. The- river was in good order for the opening, but very few fish were caught. On November Ist the river came down in heavy flood, flooding the huts and the low-lying ground in the vicinity of the river arid damaging the properties. The flood rose to within six inches of the May flood.'of last year. The river is still very high, and has. cut a new channel, of v two chains wide at the mouth, which ought to cause a good run of . trout ; frpmVthesca;- "The- run. of whitebait this season was also very poor, though bullies- and silyeries aire plentiful, and anglers believe" when the river becomes: normal that fishing will be, good. , ~;. , .• ;
