The Sumner Flower Show will be opened at 2.30 p.m. to-day. Mr E. C. Cutten, S.M.. and Mr Horace Stubbing, president and secretary respectively of the New Zealand Young Citizens' League, addressed n wellattended meeting at Napier last night, at the conclusion of which it was decided to form a branch of the League, and a strong General Committee was set up. In view of the mine owners' efforts to get the Railway Department to use nothing else but New Zealand coal, the Invereargill branch of the Enginedrivers', Firemen's, and Cleaners' Association passed a motion strongly condemning, after years of experience, the reintroduction of these coals on the railways. As an outcome of the recent Legis-. lature Act, which provides for compulsory enrolment, Registrars of Electors who have held office for many years and are permanent public officers, are being notified by the Department that their services are no longer required, and in the country electorates postmasters have been appointed to act as registrars. "There is a growing disrespect for ministers, not inside the church, but outside it; and the ministers .themselves know this," said the Rev. Dr. Gibb, while speaking at the Presbyterian General Assembly at Palmerston North. At a later stage, the speaker stated that it was easier to get a church than to keep one these days. At yesterday's informal meeting of the District Highways Council, No. 14, Mr R. W. Hawke (Waimairi), in advocating the necessity for an up-to-date road construction plant, remarked: "We have had enough tinkering over roads and electric light—everybody is talking about our rotten poles! Are we going to perpetuate this tomfoolery? I feel certain that the best road is the cheapest road,"
A meeting of the Old Colonics' Association was held yesterday, the Mayor (Mr J. A. Plesher) presiding. Various arrangements were made in connexion with the Anniversary Day celebrations, and it was decided to request all schools which had not already consented to do so to send representative groups of their pupils to take part in the celebrations. This week's mail brought to the New and South Seas Exhibition Company at Dunedin a letter from a Leipzig publicity firm addressed to "Dundee, Dunedin, New Zealand," and in the letter the writers state: "We have heard of the International Exhibition which shall take place in Dundee, and would be obliged for information.
