METHODIST SYNOD.

NORTH CANTERBURY. The annual meeting of the' North ; Canterbury Methodist Synod commenced yesterday in the Durham street Methodist Church, when the Ministerial Committee met at 10 a.m. The combined . Synod will ■ pieet this . morning ;at &.30 a.m. at a Communion service : at.which the Rev. B. Dudley will give ;an address. After the service the chairman of the district (Rev. W. A. Hay) 'will welcome the representatives, and the main business' will then proceed.

The .Rev. E. -W.-Homes, .M;A.,was recommended to pass in a probationer for the'••ministry.-.- The reports on .the candidates' book ,lists, trial sermonSj.written and delivered,"were read by the Keys. L. B. Neale, R. B. Tinsley, P. R. Paris, and J, Harris. . At the afternoon session of the Ministerial Committee, the secretary (Rev. •E. D. 'Patchett). presented -the report of thejprincipal.of the Theological-Com-mittee. /The., report stated that/Mr G. R. Peterson had sat for his terms in economics and. education; that Mr J. H. Hall had taken pure mathematics; that Messrs B. R. Hames and M. Paulger-had taken economics, mental and moral philosophy;'that Mr A. R. Penn"had taken history and economics; and Messrs C. R: Harris and H. V. Utting 'Were sitting for matriculation in December. Mr A. H. Voyce, who is offering for foreign mission work, had passed with credit examinations in first aid and home nursing. The committee' decided to - record its thanks to Dr,s.. Laws and .Ranston for their work in connexion with the college, and also to Mrs Laws for the domestic arrangements. Afternoon tea was provided .by Mrs Orston and friends, • after which the oral examination of'-the candidates for the ministry was proceeded with. The examination was conducted by the Rev. T. J. Wallis, and. after consideration the candidates were .recommended . to Conference for training for the work of the ministry. The session concluded with the reading of sections of the .Liverpool minutes.
