SOCIETY OF ARTS.

THE ANNUAL REPORT. From the point of view of finance and in the standard: of its annual exhibition, the Canterbury Society of Arts has had a- successful year. The annual report, -which will bo present' ed! at the meeting on December 2nd, states that, the annual exhibition of paintings was opened on March. 27th, and waß largely attended by members and the general public. The recoipts from admissions showed an increase of £l9 over l»3t year. During •the year, private exhibitions were held in the gallery by Mr S. L. Thompson and Miss M. O. Stoddart. Both exhibitions wero very well attended, and the sales were exceptionally good. The society purchased two of Mr Thompson's pictures, "Horses on ihe Quay," and "Evening Glow," and one of Miss Stoddart's "Akaroa Harbour at LowTide." During tho jear Mr W. Carey Hill presented a picture, "'Sunset on Port Hills,' by "W. K. Sprott, »nd, in accordance with tho rules of the society, he waa elected a life member. AVord has been received from London that the late Miss Grace Jane Joel has bequeathed to the society j>ne of her paintings entitled "A Time ot The picture will bo cent out from England. The Arts Ball, held at the close of the exhibition, proved very successful, and resulted in a. profit of £42 13s Id. Tho council is very pleased to Teport having l discharged the outstanding debentures. The sum of £SOO was paid oft in the past year. The following officers retire:—President, Mr B. C. Hnie; vice-presidents, Dr. G. SI. L. Lester and Mr R. 'Wallwork: council, Messrs A. E. Baxter, R. 8011, W. Hcnzics Gibb and S. E. McCarthy; honorary treasurer, Mr C j' R. "Williams.; honorary auditors, Messrs Anderson and Blcknell. All are eligible, if nominated, for re-election. 'J. he profit on itho society's operations in the year was £368 10s 3d. The amount received in subscriptions was £3Ol 19s, and in rent from the gallery, £493 9s.
